[SOLVED] Ulyana beta : X does not start

Post by Lightning_76 »

Hi,

I'm a long time LM/Cinnamon user (since 17.0 as long as I can remember).
I always did upgrade from one version to the next the same way :
- change repos in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
- apt update
- apt full-upgrade
(I know it's not the recommended procedure, but as a looong time Debian user,
I won't reinstall from scratch, and it always worked till Ulyana beta)

It's the first time I does it with a beta version, and my Lenovo Ideapad 100S-14IBR
does not launch the X server : I get a text console from which I have to launch it
by calling command "startx".

It's not that much of a burden, but I am not able to solve the problem : I tried
"apt install mdm" but apt told the last version (0.1.3-2.1build3) is installed.

The funny thing is I followed same procedure to upgrade an old Compaq Presario
CQ71, and the graphical interface starts without problem.

Anyone can help ?

Thanks !

... beta ...
As per the beta release notes:

"Bugs in this release should be reported on Github at https://github.com/linuxmint/mint20-beta."

https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3915
It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.

since I've done the same method .. and it crashed that Laptop
:(
thus I've had to perform an Clean Installation of the LM20 Beta .. instead.

so, in this case .. what happens if you Type: Start X .. at the prompt?
- does that re-start the GUI or not ?.

Yes, as not explicitly said when I wrote «I get a text console from which I have to launch it by calling command "startx". » the GUI starts and all goes well. (All is in the "it").

But now that Ulyana is officialy out, I expected an "apt-get update ; apt-get -u dist-upgrade" would solve the trouble....
This is not the case : I still have to start the GUI via startx.

I wonder what I should do with my main machine that is silll running tricia : I think I'll wait some days before attempting an update via apt and I it fails, I'll do an clean install via the ulyana ISO image.
Burden is I use the TexLive package from the real texlive repository, so I guess I'll have to deal with a misconfigured texlive installation after the "clean" install.

If my test machine does not get back to a normal behaviour, there's a possibility I switch back to Arch "rolling release" Linux...

Even Windows offers the possibility to switch painlessly from a W10 version to the next.
("painlessly" meaning not taking in account hours of dowloading the upgrade and dealing with multiples reboots)

If you're using MDM, then the upgrade probably (re)installed LightDM, and maybe the two are fighting each other. Check with apt policy lightdm and if it's installed, uninstall it.

I have already tons of useless accounts on some web sites...I won't create another useless one.
If Linux Mint people are not able/aware enough to read their own forums, it just mean Mint is dead : so I'll switch back to Arch/Debian or even Slackware.
I just don't care : all I want is an easy to manage/upgrade distro : as said in another post, even Windows has a painless procedure to upgrade an W10 version to the next version (I just switched from 1909 to 2004 : useless since I use W10 2 hours a month).

The only thing I can add is that systemctl start mdm says Failed to start mdm.service: Unit mdm.service is masked
I don't care what it means but I searched the web what it means and did not get what it means and how to solve the problem....

I don't want to deal with Minted way of dealing with APT : Debian APT is easy to use, not the Minted APT, so why would I stay under Mint ?
There are tons of distros to give a try !!!

To those who would pretend I'm a troll, I'll just answer nothing : flame me, I just don't care (some of you flamers weren't just born when I installed my first distro ;-))

So, it wasn't that. It's beyond me then, I'm afraid.

there shouldn't be ant differences, with the Auto-Upgraded version.
:?
can you try again, but by downloading the Newly Released Version,
- to see if that has the same starting error ?.

I suspect the issue is that you are still using MDM, which was deprecated after 18.3. It still worked OK throughout 19.x, but I suspect the new package base in 20 has finally broken it.

Mint provides an upgrade tool for major upgrades for a reason, to avoid these issues.

It might be worth installing lightdm to see if that gets you a working system.

I've tried mintupdate but I wonder if this is the tool you're talking about ?

Code: Select all

# apt-get install slick-greeter lightdm lightdm-settings apparmor
# apt-get remove --purge mdm
# dpkg-reconfigure lightdm
effectively solved my problem.

Thanks to all of you.

mintupdate handles point release upgrades, mintupgrade is a cli tool for major version upgrades. The 19.3 > 20 version is still being worked on by the dev team, but for an example of how it works see the 18.3 > 19 instructions here - https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2416

Exactly the same problem on my DELL laptop (with an ordinary mintupgrade installation, not with the beta version). Solved by what's recommended above:

As of 12th of July, I've found mintupgrade in the repos so I've given it a try but it fails as some package depends on python 3.7 but python 3.8 will be installed...

And, as I watched what was going on, I think that mintupgrade does nothing more than changing "tricia" to "ulyana" and "bionic" to "focal" in the sources.list.d directory and then an "apt full-upgrade".

So that package "mintupgrade" is useless since I can do what it does by myself (and it fails the same way I tried by myself).

Nevermind, I'll soon upgrade my hard and will then install Ulyana from scratch...

Hi,

Yesterday (Friday 17), I noticed that mintupgrade was upgraded three times in a row, so I decided to give it another try... and it worked : I now have a full Ulyana.

Ulyana works well but I was unable to reinstall virtualbox : so back under Tricia (thanks to timeshift).

If you were trying to install via a deb file downloaded from Oracle add their repo instead.
