What if?

Post by DoodMann »

What if Linux Mint ran out of names? I remember at one site saying that @clem planned to name Linux Mint vrsions to names of women alphabetically and must and with letter A. What would happen if we ran out of names?

He'd probably think up some other naming scheme.

I wouldn't mind a "What if .." machine like the one the Professor demonstrated in a Futurama episode.

As far as names go I'm not too bothered either way personally and tend to go by the version number. I'm not good with names and at least having some structure with the naming scheme helps a bit with that when people go by the name on here. Hope it carries on that way.

Agreed. I also prefer version numbers, tyvm. The last OS maker I paid attention to which used names for each release was Apple. Honestly it's much more cumbersome and likely to lead to errors unless you really keep up on it and are into that sort of thing.

Hey, sorry reply. Been watching jacksepticeye from The Last of Us Part II. Anyways, does that mean we just go to random names?

No one can answer that question except for Clem. How do you expect anyone else to come up with the answer? We can't read his mind.
Random names seems unlikely. I stand with my previous reply: He'd probably think up some other naming scheme.

Frankly, I feel it would be fantastic if "they" ran out of names for Linux versions. Intel does the same thing for identifying the generations of their processors and it's a nightmare to keep track of what follows when people use the name instead of the number.

This reminds me of one of Corporate America's stupid fads (that, sadly, stuck) of giving meeting rooms a name instead of a number. Before, if going to a meeting in a building you weren't familiar with (or you just didn't go to enough meetings to be familiar with the meeting room names), you could easily find a meeting room with a room number, even in a large, multifloor building. With a name only, you had to ask someone where the meeting room was and endure the "What, are you an idiot?" looks you got from whomever you asked.

As if 2020 couldn't get any worse. World pandemic, invasive murder hornets, riots in the streets... and now I will be laying awake at night worrying about Mint running out of names too. Will it never end?
