Post by choxberg »

first things first: i love mint!
but: firefox with default setting is crap on mint.
same counts for:
>apt install chromium (only a fake-wrapper)
i know, you want to make money...but please not this way, users are not idiots
give me your paypal adress, i'll send you 10 dollars, if you stop to ugligfy firefox!
i even could not add google as the default search engine, confused?
had to download firefox via http download and apt remove it!
you killed my package manger! apt update; apt upgrade

How search engines can be added to Firefox was changed in a recent release of Firefox. That's not something Linux Mint did. Here are the steps to add a search engine on Firefox 78.0.1:
  1. In Firefox go to Preferences > Search > (at the bottom) Find more search engines;
  2. On that page click the icon of the search engine you want to add (that isn't in your list of search engines yet);
  3. Then on the right side of the Firefox address bar click the ••• icon to open the page actions menu and choose Add Search Engine.
Here's a short video to demonstrate the above steps for Google: https://i.imgur.com/LE6xTAZ.mp4

Instructions for how to add search engines has also been updated on the search engines pages from https://linuxmint.com/searchengines.php.

Chromium issue is mentioned in the release notes for Linux Mint 20. Alternative ways to install it are in the user guide: https://linuxmint-user-guide.readthedoc ... omium.html. The link there explains why Linux Mint removed the Ubuntu Chromium package, as that would now sneakily install the Ubuntu Store on your system.

The fourth thing I do on any new Linux Mint installation is:

Code: Select all

cd ~/Downloads
wget https://dl.google.com/linux/direct/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb
# will not show up in menu until after reboot
/usr/bin/google-chrome-stable
