What distro would you use for your main daily driver other than Mint?

Post by Barbados99 »

What OS/distro do you regard highest other than Mint? Or do you already have a main daily driver other than Mint? Just curious.
My homemade daily-driver:
Mint 20 XFCE - Mint 20 LMDE4 Cinnamon - EndeavourOS XFCE - EndeavourOS i3
Ryzen 5 3600 - GeForce GTX 1660 - BenQ 27"
1TB NVMe SSD - 32GB DDR4 - and a lot of old parts from the scrap pile

Mint rules. My second best: Xubuntu.

Zorin OS (Core ISO) which I installed on my Mother's PC instead of W7 SP1 and she was right at home with it immediately. She already used LibreOffice and Thunderbird, Firefox and Google Chrome occasionally depending on the website being used so the learning curve was near minimal. Her favourite casual windows games run fine with WINE too. Their WINE integration is excellent, you can autoplay a setup executable.

On four of my computers, I run Mint, and still like it. I even still run 32-bit Mint Xfce on my old Lenovo netbook, and probably will until Mint 19's EOL or the machine bites the dust, whichever comes first.

On the fifth, a System76 Darter Pro, I run Pop_OS, the System76-curated Ubuntu derivative that was factory installed. From what I've read, it would be easy enough to install Mint on it, but Pop_OS does what I need it to for that machine--and just that. That is both a positive and a negative; the OS stays out of my way, but it often takes me a little more digging to tweak a Pop_OS setting than it does in Mint.

I think I'd give a try setting up a "tailored to my needs" Gentoo (or Arch) working environment. I've wrestled with both of those distros. They seem like the anti-Mint. So different. A ton of work. But I am intrigued by being able to customize a distro to that extent. I about lost my mind installing Gentoo but I think I could grow to like it a lot.

Debian as you can see from my avatar. It is already running on the rest of the machines in my house.

Kde Manjaro. I stumbled upon it by accident, but found it to be most user friendly, versatile Linux experience. BUT I have not used it for long yet..., time will tell if it can equal Mint?

I'd go with MX Linux if I didn't use Mint Xfce. It works OOTB just like Mint.

I see that MX now have a KDE beta, but I'm not a fan of KDE myself.

Linux Mint is okay. Otherwise I like also semi rolling, systemd free release PCLinuxOS.

Manjaro Xfce. Was having troubling getting Mint loaded onto an external drive so decided to give Manjaro a try. Like it so far.

Why such a question placed in the Chat about Linux Mint forum, why not in the Chat about Linux (it intrinsically excludes Linux Mint as a subject) ?

Besides Linux Mint I'm using Debian Bullseye with Cinnamon and XFCE DE, Parrot Security OS and Xubuntu, each for some reason or a specific purpose. Anyway all my Linux Mint installations are most frequently used OSes (though most frequently used OS and most used OS are likely to be different distributions). Still I'm at loss what is "a main daily driver" is. It is a cliche isn't it?

Most likely I would either use Debian, or maybe Pop O/S with some other window manager than Gnome.

That is a good point, I should have posted this in the Linux forum. Maybe a mod can move it. Sorry about that.

Regarding what a daily-driver OS is, I just use that term for the distro that I use on my main computer that I use to do the bulk of my serious work. That's the computer that I rely on to "just work" and not have me dinking around with the OS. In fact I want that computer's OS to just be something I don't have to think about. It just needs to be rock-solid without needing my time fussing with anything. My other computers can be more fun (like an Arch or Gentoo installation with more bleeding edge software installed). But my work computer is there to just chunk out the work.

No idea. It would take a lot of soul searching and experimentation.

If LM suddenly pfffffft! out of existence, that would almost certainly take Cinnamon with it.

Clearly, someone else would take over Cinnamon because of its great popularity, but if for some reason that didn't happen, then I'd have to really rethink what my visual paradigm priorities would be.

I've used Solus before, and their DE, Budgie, is pretty cool. The problem with a lot of distros out there is the availability of apps in their repos. Also, what kind of longevity do they have? Should I just bite the bullet and go directly to Debian? I dunno.

As I said, this would require a lot of soul searching.
Your humble Portreve.
