Mint dependant on Debian rather than Ubuntu

Post by tonyaimer »

I am not sure that being dependant on Ubuntu is such a good idea.

Can anyone expand on the idea of building Mint directly from Debian?

I have no idea about what would be involved but I would love to know what Mint
has to say about that subject.

Regards

Mint already on it. If you look carefully on the download page there is a LMDE which is Linux Mint Debian Edition. It's excellent. Based on Debian Buster rather than Ubuntu. I've tried it and it is beautiful.

Hi Tony.

From, as we say, the horses mouth https://www.linuxmint.com/download_lmde.php

If you're particularly worried about Ubuntu, nip over to https://distrowatch.com/ and search for non Ubuntu based distros.

Ubuntu is going to be around for sure. It's good that Mint has a safety net in case they ever would need to drop Ubuntu. On a side note, regarding distrowatch, I do find it interesting that of the top-5 distros listed there, only Mint and Ubuntu are Ubuntu based. #1 MX Linux is Debian based. #2 Manjaro is Arch based. Debian is #5. Ubuntu is good but there ARE other players in the Linux game. I like the fact that there are so many distros to choose from though. Choice is a good thing.

Ubuntu does a lot of the "heavy lifting" in the desktop Linux world.
Love them or hate them, they've opened the doors for many people seeking alternative operating systems.

I've been a Linux user since before Canonical. I remember what that was like.

You will note that all Mint variations on distrowatch are listed under "Mint", including the Debian version. This is just hits to the site, and Mint has one site for all it's versions.

Ubuntu hits don't include L/X/Kubuntu or KDE Neon, which have more in common with Ubuntu than LMDE does with Mint main edition.

You will also note that 6, 8 and 11 on the list represent 3500 hits and are all Ubuntu based.

I think the best point (IMO) is the stats don't really mean anything.

#30 is ReactOS which isn't even a Linux distro and has consistently been in the top 50 for well over a year, although it's starting to drop now.

The only thing I find useful about the site is looking at the package versions available on other systems. That sometimes comes in handy when someone says X works when I run Insert-OS-Here, but not on Mint.

One thing I do like about the site is that I can click on a distro that I am curious about and it gives some handy background info & also I can read various reviews about the distro from the links there. I guess my only point is that while I like Mint as my favorite distro (and it is based on Ubuntu), it's not like it's our only option for Linux. There are a number of rock-solid distros that are not based on Ubuntu. If the Mint team would ever decide to go in a different direction with their main offering (not because Ubuntu goes away, but due to a difference of philosophy) I don't think Mint would miss a beat as far as being a solid offering. LMDE is there waiting to become the main offering if ever needed. BTW, I even like the Arch based offerings (like Manjaro and love EndeavourOS)... and years ago I used Red Hat. Lotta options other than Ubuntu. It's not the only game in town.

I agree with everything you said. :D

P.S. And I did forget one other nice use of the site. It's really handy to find the forum of other distros.
