We should just call it Fred.

I hope you are just kidding. :) I don't think the naming convention was intentionally chosen to offend anyone.

Offense caused unintentionally is even worse because it proves how unwoke people are!

Some people are just looking for a reason to be offended. The offenderatti are prowling the Internet in search and destroy missions. I know it well. I have been a victim. Metoo.

When Tarzan asked "Uliana?" and she answered "No, me Jane, liana are those vines hanging from trees".

Personally, the only Uliana a have heard of was a really nice transgender octopus who died a horrible death in an accident. Very sad story.

Good God. Disagree of course.

I have another question: when will people stop to create childish attention seeking fake controversies? "Much ado about nothing" is not what will bring solace and salvation to our suffering planet.

I could not care less about the code names that Mint uses if I tried with both hands. Male, female, animal, plant, mineral... it's all fine. It does not affect me in any way.

Funny how people who lead with "Childish" are always emotionally stunted. What drivel. And personally I prefer to use the number series.

the OP's opinion is correct. it's a bad omen to name your private boat/yacht anything other than female names. personally i like females so doesn't bother me. but in that respect then why are females considered the weaker sex? and if you twist my words and say i'm sexist because i called women weak, you should complain to the one that made up that expression.
at least android started naming their releases after baked goods and frozen dessert:
2.1 Android 1.0 (API 1)
2.2 Android 1.1 (API 2)
2.3 Android 1.5 Cupcake (API 3)
2.4 Android 1.6 Donut (API 4)
2.5 Android 2.0 Eclair (API 5)
2.6 Android 2.2 Froyo (API 8)
2.7 Android 2.3 Gingerbread (API 9)
2.8 Android 3.0 Honeycomb (API 11)
2.9 Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (API 14)
2.10 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (API 16)
2.11 Android 4.4 KitKat (API 19)
2.12 Android 5.0 Lollipop (API 21)
2.13 Android 6.0 Marshmallow (API 23)
2.14 Android 7.0 Nougat (API 24)
2.15 Android 8.0 Oreo (API 26)
2.16 Android 9 Pie (API 28)
2.17 Android 10 (API 29)
2.18 Android 11 (API 30)

I don't see any point at all in using names in addition to version numbers. It's just slightly confusing.

What is, or was, the reason in the first place?

But this is even goofier than Mint's naming convention (as are the Ubuntu names):
"Debian distribution codenames are based on the names of characters from the Toy Story films."

To me the names are meaningless and I can never remember them. I just use the numbers.

But if names are going to be used they could even sell naming rights ... Linux Mint 235 PepsiCola ... I like it.

Personally?

I hate the code names, and refuse to use them, they indicate exactly zero as to what the OS is.

Maybe Mint could begin naming the releases after members of the Mint development team. These dedicated people work hard to provide us with a fantastic operating system. It would be pretty cool to honor them this way. Maybe they could provide a brief and fun bio on the person being honored too.
My homemade daily-driver:
Mint 20 XFCE - Mint 20 LMDE4 Cinnamon - EndeavourOS XFCE - EndeavourOS i3
Ryzen 5 3600 - GeForce GTX 1660 - BenQ 27"
1TB NVMe SSD - 32GB DDR4 - and a lot of old parts from the scrap pile

I people respond better to a female name and or voice, Cortana, Alexa... Lots of great ships, cars are named after female names. I do not think it an insult but shows honor.

Actually Pat is one of a few names which are bisexual. "Pat" can be short for "Patricia", a female name, or "Patrick", a male name

Among well-known Pats are:

Patti Smith

Patti O'Furniture

Pat Moynihan

Pat (Saturday Night Live)
