If Mint re-did their website to feature whizzing graphics and seizure-inducing animations...

...I would probably just end up blocking them through the browser anyway.

I have been wondering are two different things being talked about?
Linux Mint website - https://linuxmint.com/
Linux Mint discussion forum - https://forums.linuxmint.com/

Even so both are easy to read and find things on, especially the discussion forum.

I would assume so, since both are green, and I guess the color is part of the "problem" (which really isn't a problem).

Because the Irish are jealous of someone else using green?

It supposed to be a soothing colour hence the Green Room.

I'm not too sure of the point, but anyway...

Kind of funny . . . . every forum I frequent this topic comes up eventually.
Personally I couldn't care less how the web site looks as long as it works but I do get the "appeal to new users" angle.
Are there not experts that study that stuff and can suggest what attracts would be users?

I'm not what you might call an expert, but I have looked at this to some degree in the past.

Some headlines in brief,

1. Identify your market (Probably Windows refugees, the curious, young and new to computers, those looking to save some bucks, rebels ...)
2. Online SEO (and possibly social media) so those types of user are likely to find you.
3. Website: keep it simple, highlight the benefits and popularity, and make it look easy to download and take the OS for a spin.
4. Reinforce the message about good community support, good documentation etc (reassurance that it's a good distro to go for).

Support all this with additional useful content. Communicate as an authority in this arena - creates confidence.

I would also consider a newsletter (mailing list) that gets sent at same time as major news updates. This keeps the (opt in) userbase engaged and aware.

A website update is a good start, but ideally would be part of a broader strategy.

Antikythera, this forum is a classroom to learn, rather
than a museum for entertainment; besides "fugly" is in
the eyes of the beholder.

Here are some "modern looking" websites of a few popular distros:

https://manjaro.org/

https://elementary.io/

https://getsol.us/home/

You do your best to draw people in, but they have to want to go in. At some point, people will get over the sizzle and start looking for the steak.

Not sure what's wrong with phpBB; it's an awesome system, IMO. That said, I hate having to put stuff in tags, when posting; I wish it used markdown like on GitHub, with keyboard shortcuts.

I agree that the site could do with some updating, but oh well; hardly high on their list of priorities, I imagine. At least it's simple to navigate and not bloated. Were someone to choose their distro based solely on the developer's website, then they can move merrily on for all I care, because their priorities are outta whack, IMO.
I use Linux Mint 18.3 with Cinnamon in a VirtualBox VM for testing & sandboxing.
