And answers to almost every single question ever asked on these forums is available in a search engine near you, but some people simply don't think about that, nor do they think about what they are asking for help with. "Hi! I'm running Manjaro and the folks over at the Manjaro forum can't answer my question so I thought I'd ask here...", or "Hi! I'm running Windows 10 and get a blue screen of death...", and when questioned on the sanity of asking such things here, the response is something along the lines of, "Well, my mother's uncle Tom's brother works with a woman who has a cousin three times removed whose grandmother's great aunt Bertha once saw Linux Mint in a shop window, so I hardly think this is off-topic".
TBH I was being a bit 'tongue in cheek' Kadaitcha Man. Trying to make the point (maybe not too subtly!) that it's not that easy to find the info the OP is looking for on the LM website. In fact, I've just spent 10 minutes challenging my own assertion, and as yet I haven't found anything there that would give a potential new user a clear definition between the different editions.

I googled it in the end and I did get the LM readthedocs install guide (https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... hoose.html) which is sort of close to home, this forum, and others that are written by third parties, e,g. :
https://www.fosslinux.com/42787/linux-m ... s-mate.htm
https://linuxhint.com/linux_mint_cinnamon_vs_mate/
https://www.lifewire.com/linux-mint-cin ... ts-4175395
etc

but i just think it shouldn't be that tricky for a newb trying to differentiate, and that the relevant info should be where you'd expect to find it first.

Two cents :)

Exactly, its all fine and dandy that we are in the forums, and can get info .
But a newbie, just looking at LM site can't differentiate between versions.
I believe the Ubuntu site is the same, many version, but , how to choose

I've heard a rumor that there may be a few reviews and installation guides on a site called YouTube.

Interesting discussion with a new version of LMDE in beta. Does it have any differences that would change the discussion? I cannot see any.

What I think should be added to the notes are GPU versus no GPU, Cinnamon with effects off, and the amount of memory.

My previous machine had 4 GB and for normal minimal use, email, Web browsing, occasionally ran over 4 GB with KDE, the main reason I did not use KDE. My machine had no GPU so I switched off effects in Cinnamon. Effects on, Cinnamon slightly slower for some things. Effects off, no difference from MATE.

My new machine is faster all round, has 16 GB and a GPU. It is so fast, it could probably run KDE. The decision process is different for fast hardware.

The other difference I find is how easy it is to add an entry to the menu. If you only use stuff out of the software manager, that is not a problem.

There is also the future of LMDE vs LMQt.
