Linux Forum: Rules (These Don't Work)?

Post by Burning Desires 69 »

My Mail seems to all go straight to Spam, which I set some Rules to Prevent this,
& yet I have a feeling the Rules are not having any Effect.

It's almost as if the Rules = A Null Effect.

Example: If (Message) Is "Important" (Place In Inbox)

How does Linux Forums know that a Message is Important?
Was anyone else able to figure out how to make the Rules in the Linux Forums work?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shouldn't Rules be setup more like this instead?

Rule #1:
If (Message) Is "Important" (Place In Saved Inbox)
If (Message) Is Not "Important" (Place In Inbox)
(Message) Is "Important" If (Subject Is Shown)

Rule #2:
If (Message) Is "Harmful" (Delete Message)
If (Message) Is Not "Harmful" (Place In Inbox)
(Message) Is "Harmful" If (Sender Is Foe)

Rule #3:
If (Message) Is "Spam" (Place In Spam)
If (Message) Is "Not Spam" (Place In Saved Spam)
(Message) Is "Spam" If (Warning)

Things in "" Are Typed By Us & Things in () Are from A Menu

I dunno, something like this?

--------------------------------------

Currently, Rules Work like this?

Rule #1:
If (Message) Is "Important" (Place In Saved Inbox)

Me Saying: WHAT?!? o_@

Hello Burning Desires.

I wonder a bit about which rules you are talking in your post? And why have you submitted your post in the Cinnamon sub-forum? What is the relation to your Cinnamon desktop?
Could you elaborate a little bit, please, about which rules you are talking? Thunderbird? Evolution? Claws? Outlook? What else?

Best regards,
Karl

I didn't know where to Post it, if this is the wrong place. Then i'm not sure where to Post it.

It was for the Linux Mint Forums.

I was Posting about Forum Rules that are Listed under Each User's Profile Settings.
Found under Private Messages / Rules, Folders, & Settings TAB.

DEFINED RULES:
Listed

Listed

ADD NEW RULE:
If (..........) [Next]
I Loved World = 80's & 90's
World Hates Me = 2016 to 2019
I Hate World = 2020 & ^

OK. Thank you. This is what I needed in order to understand where you define rules, which do not have any effect, as you report.
I admit that I had never noticed the tab "Rules, Folders, & Settings" under "Private Messages" (in more than 9 years).

Soooo, I was correct in making my Post that they don't do anything.

So in that case, wouldn't it be a good Suggestion to fix this?
If that is indeed Possible?

Would my Suggestion be enough to consider
a good Suggestion for a Forum Update?

The reason for my Suggestion is that my Mail or Private Messages
are not exactly working correctly, & I keep having some awkward problems with it.

This Update would more then likely fix my issue.

Could this be a new feature? I have never seen it before, either.

Hello, Burning Desires.

I guess that you misunderstand what a rule like in your first example If (Message) Is "Important" (Place In Saved Inbox) means.
You interpret the string "important" as if it refers to the degree of relevance of the message.
No, much more basic: The message is just one word and the word is "important".

I.e. the forum software does not make any assumptions on whether a message has got the quality "important", "unimportant", "urgent", "dangerous" or "not dangerous" etc pp.

Please, see the phpBB help page on private messages rules: Message rules

HTH,
Karl

Correction To an Earlier issue:

It's not that I used this line here.

If (Message) is "Spam" (place in Spam Folder)
If (Message) is "Not Spam" (Place In Saved Spam Folder)

I meant to say I used this line here instead.

If (Message) is "Spam" (Place In Spam Folder)
If (Message) is not "Spam" (Place In Saved Spam Folder)

The correction is that I did not say is for both, I used is for one & is not for the other.
So that is the difference being shown here. Though? It did not make any difference.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You interpret the string "important" as if it refers to the degree of relevance of the message.
No, much more basic: The message is just one word and the word is "important".

I get that things from the Drop down menu work?
But the part of the Rules that don't seem to work, are from the "Blank Field"

If Message is

"Blank Field" = ?Type Anything In?

Place In Such Folder Or Delete It

The issue I got is? Is the "Blank Field", I was trying to setup a
way for the Forums to determine what is Spam & what isn't Spam,
what should be Deleted, & what shouldn't be Deleted.

Automatically...

But no matter what I typed in the "Blank Field", the Forums could not figure out
how to determine what to do with the "Blank Field".

Since it's a Blank Field & not a Drop Down Box? I could not determine what to use
in the "Blank Field" Space. I was curious if there were some Commands that go there.
The Link you Provided does not specify anything to do with the Blank Field.

It just specifies information in the each of the Drop Down Boxes.

I am gonna try & change something, & see if it makes any difference.

Reason: Adding quote tags to what seems to be a quote. Please make sure to use these, or things get confusing.

We seem to be talking about PM (private messages). How can they go straight to Spam? I don't see a Spam folder. Did you create one?

I found out it's not Spam Mail,
it's Saved Spam Mail that is where the Messages are going...

My Solution i'm attempting is to change something in my Rules i've set...

If Subject is Present | Place into folder: Inbox
If Message is Trusted | Place into folder: Inbox

Vs.

If Message is not Trusted | Place into folder: Spam
If Message is Spam | Place into folder: Spam

What i've determined is that probably one of these things here is
Conflicting with this Rule here?

If Message is not Spam | Place into folder: Saved Spam

I could be wrong? But i'm gonna attempt changing my Rule for this...

If Message is not Trusted

& have it changed so that it says this instead...

If User is not Trusted

That way it's a User, & not a Message, but if this doesn't work? Then I got no idea
how to fix the idea, without having all of the Rules Completely Wiped out... At that
point I would have to confirm that the Rules don't function correctly at all, as someone
else had already mentioned that they didn't think the Rules do anything...

I admit that I had never noticed the tab "Rules, Folders, & Settings" under "Private Messages" (in more than 9 years).
A little over 10 years here. It seems I average about one message a year...hence, not something that needs any of my attention.

I wonder how many messages the OP gets. And if the number is not that many, then (maybe) like other email programs it will need time, and practice to "learn" what is important, and what is spam?

This is not really a Concern... It's not a huge issue...
If I can't get it working, then i'm likely to stop using it entirely...

Like I get this part here...

If Message is: "Blank"
Place Into folder: "Blank"

That tells me that the Rules can Assign the word "Message" to another "Word"...

However, there is no Rule that allows you to state this...

Message is: "Blank"
When Subject is shown

This tells me that the Rules cannot understand what "Blank" is,
& does not know how to determine what to do with the Message...

If the Rules are meant to be handled with a more Manual use from the Users,
that sorta defeats the whole purpose of setting up Rules then, doesn't it?
Since it just means your doing it by yourself anyways?

The 1st part of the Rule is not the issue,
the issue is that the 2nd part of the Rule is missing... No?
