Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Just wanted to share my experience. Perhaps I am an odd duck in that basically I am a Mac guy posting on a Linux forum. Pre Catalina the only reason I had for using Linux was to support my wife's PC many years ago. I truly hate windows and just put her on Ubuntu so she had a computer and I didn't have to deal with it. (She now has a friend supporting her Windows 10 which I still hate but is not my problem;-)
Now days I keep an early 2011 MBP i7 with Mint running on a spinning HD just for the experience and to be prepared for when Apple crosses the line on a signed OS. I can freeze my required Mac systems and run them from here. Amazed at how much better Mint has gotten over the years and despite my current problem with Firefox, the upgrade process and current Ulyssa version are very good.
Mostly I just use the laptop for watching Colbert in the morning. Not sure what happened but I think CBS changed something and it might be in combination with a Firefox upgrade but for whatever reason this stopped working. There is nothing on this computer I really care about so I thought it had been long enough since 19.3 I would try to do the upgrade. Old hardware spinning HD. Yes it took a while. As far as I can tell everything went great except for Firefox. IIRC, I removed and reinstalled before the upgrade trying to get colbert to work. Post upgrade I didn't even have Firefox. Installed it and when i did install it crashed on launch. Tried the other Firefox and that also crashed. Found Chromium transitional and that worked! Next, Brave and that worked even better! Decided to go to Ulyssa and that also went perfect except for firefox. Somewhere in this process I lost my Real VNC and had to install as a standalone. Brave required an update to flatpak. Still have to learn more about the different ways to install software but for the most part I love this because things just work. Brave threw up a warning about the DRM that CBS was requiring and I think that was what started my whole adventure.
I just want a computer that works. Mint has been good for that. As far as I can tell everything other than Firefox is working fine in Ulyssa. My email is working fine and that is Thunderbird so it is especially odd to me that Firefox would be hosed. Things worked OK in 19.3. In Ulyssa things seem to be working even better. Trackpad, Blutooth, Wireless, HDMI external monitor, all working and the trackpad is perfect compared to occasional freezes in 19.3. I like this so much that I am inspired to do what I should have long ago and put a dual boot SSD in this laptop. Will do that as a clean install and likely the problem with Firefox will go away.
Just out of curiosity does anyone have any idea as to why Firefox won't launch for me? I removed it, re-installed it, deleted the hidden files in my home folder and still no dice. Don't have a clue where to go next.
Thanks for letting me make that rant. And thank you to everyone who contributes to this remarkable project! While I don't much care for computers as a hobby I sure to like using them. I develop custom business databases on a very old proprietary Mac database. (Helix) If not for that fact I think Mint has reached a point where outside of BBEdit I don't think I would really miss anything by making Mint my full time OS. Certainly this is way better than Windows 10. Things make sense, work, are responsive. None of which I experience if I have to use my wife's windows 10 laptop.

Apparently I had uninstalled it. Did sudo apt and then tried it again. Same crash. Here is the result when I called it from the terminal.
$ firefox
ExceptionHandler::GenerateDump cloned child 27895
ExceptionHandler::SendContinueSignalToChild sent continue signal to child
ExceptionHandler::WaitForContinueSignal waiting for continue signal...
Writes a crash report but I don't know enough to understand it. Always thread 0 that crashes FWIW.

have you tried Installing an alternative to the Firefox program ?
- there is several alternatives, including the most common ones.
did that work ?.

This may not be the best course of action, but this is what I would do.Did sudo apt and then tried it again
Use Synaptic Package Manager to remove FF completely. Then reinstall FF 85.0 via the Software Manager. Maybe you don't need FF, but that is what I would do.
Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Did that but the only version available, that I could see, was FF 86.mikeflan wrote: ⤴Fri Mar 05, 2021 10:49 pmThis may not be the best course of action, but this is what I would do.Did sudo apt and then tried it again

Interesting that a synaptic complete removal left .mozilla in my home directory. Deleted that and then did the reinstall. Same result. Interesting that after deleting .mozilla the new version had versions of the crash logs from before that directory was created. Is this just a symlink to an entirely different process? Did part of Firefox not get deleted? How did files that were created before the directory existed end up in that directory?
Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Hi, I have problem with firefox 86 crashing too. I don't know how to upload image here, but basically it is 'Mozilla Crash Reporter' window that gets popped whenever I click on firefox icon. As much as I can remember, this happened when I did upgrade while firefox was running. I checked elsewhere and downgraded to firefox v85 via Synaptic (Lock version option does not work btw). That works OK but if I upgrade to v86 it starts crashing. I tried reinstalling, removing .mozilla folder etc. Still no luck. If I try to launch firefox from terminal below is what I am gettting.
How can I fix this?
TIA.
P.S.: I just used a recent thread. If you think I'm hijacking the thread let me know I'll open a new one.

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
I don't know about thread hijacking but I would like to add 2 things to this in the hope that it may help.
1. I suspect it is possible my problems started with an update while FF was open.
2. When I go to force version in Synaptic, there are 2 86 builds and 1 version 75. If I force version 75 Firefox will work. Not sure if I can or how to get to version 85.

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
@wwblm, thank you for not minding me adding my issue under your thread.
I can confirm there is no v85 in Synaptic now. When I mentioned I installed v85 that was some days ago. Now only two versions of v86 and v75 are shown in Synaptic.
When I had changed to v85, firefox launched, asking to create new profile. It started to fail again when I tried to upgrade to v86.
I purged the deb package and installed flatpak version. Unfortunately even the flatpak version crashes albeit with slightly different message in the popup-window. It is still 'Mozilla Crash Reporter' but says,

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
I'm having the exact same problem with my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro running on a SSD with Linux Mint 20.1.
When initially installed Firefox works, but once all the updates have completed it stops working and brings up a crash report.
I've also tried installing Mint 19.3 to see if that would cure the problem but unfortunately not.
Apart from the issue with Firefox, Linux MInt runs great with everything working on my old MacBook.

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
saivinoba Are you also on a MacBook?
Lebond Might you have run an update while Firefox was open?
Would be interesting to know if perhaps this is only happening to those of us running a MBP.
I need to give it a rest for a while as for one thing I am quite happy with my current Mint setup for what I use it for. When I get caught up on several other things I will try a clean install. My guess is that either that will work or someone will find out what is happening with v. 86 unless it is only happening with
Intel 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics vendor: Apple driver: i915 Probably not enough of running this setup.

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
In my LM19.3 Software Manager there is a ver 85 Firefox, which is the one I am running:
https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/firefox
There is also a ver 86 Flatpak, which I don't use.
If necessary, older versions can be obtained from here:

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
@Lebond, @wwblm, interesting you mentioned MBP. Yes, I'm also on MBP 13" late 2011 or early 2012 model and have SSD. Following is my system information.
As you both have mentioned, it is just issue with firefox and that too started only after upgrade to v86, but otherwise LM 20.1 is running very smooth.

Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Hi, another option is to use Firefox ESR. Read this tutorial to realize that. Firefox ESR does not come with the latest features but has the lastest security and stability fixes. It is actually meant for large organisations cq. businesses that need to set up and maintain Firefox on a large scale.
Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Thank you everyone who replied, I managed to get Firefox working by installing Firefox ESR.
Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
Just to add onto your thread, Firefox 85 works okay for me but FF 86 crashes as soon as I restore my saved passwords. No amount of uninstalling, deleting and reinstalling makes any difference, just downloading to v85 works. I also performed a clean install of mate 20.1 and my passwords restored, FF worked until I upgrade to v86. Incidentally , FF 86 doesn't crash until I reboot or logout and back in.
Re: Firefox not working but otherwise impressed with upgrade and current version!
FWIW I am now typing this on the same laptop with Firefox 87.0. So far so good. All updates have been applied Kernel: 5.4.0-72-generic x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 9.3.0 Desktop: Cinnamon 4.8.6 wm: muffin dm: LightDM Distro: Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa base: Ubuntu 20.04 focal
Not sure of 87 changed something. Was on the ESR in prior install as 86 would not work. I think the reason it would not work may have been because of updating a running copy of firefox or possibly updating after a prior update when a restart was required but not yet performed.
Finally I did what I said in my first post and now have a fresh dual boot partitioned SSD. Very nice to have Mint on the SSD! The installation was flawless and easy! (Except for the fact that I blew up a bootable mac partition on a USB SSD that also had a live CD partition using etcher. Senior moment. wish I could remember how I built that multi boot usb stick with the mac and Linux partitions. Not a huge deal as I didn't really need anything on it and now that this is up and running I will reformat it anyway.)
Very happy with the install and even though I may now switch to Brave for my primary browser it is nice to have Firefox functioning as it should. Odd that whatever was wrong could not be resolved with removal reinstall but at least with a clean install everything works.
