Skip Mint 20 and wait for 21?

Post by Boca »

what are your thoughts on skipping Mint 20 and waiting for 21?

Both my laptops are currently on 19.3 which is supported to April 2023.
Mint 21 launch is scheduled for mid-2022 (viewtopic.php?f=46&t=334222)

My thinking..

One of my pc is quite old

Code: Select all

Machine: Type: Laptop System: Dell product: Latitude E6430 v: 01 serial: <filter>
Mobo: Dell model: 0CPWYR v: A00 serial: <filter> BIOS: Dell v: A07 date: 10/08/2012
I don't see any significant functional advantage in upgrading to 20.
although an install of 20 itself is not difficult, there are various customisations that I need to perform to " get back to where I am with 19.3"
Upgrading to Mint 21 in late 2022 should have given it time to ease out any issues.

PS I haven't yet tried a live install of 20... but the outcome of that trial would also be a factor

This post I'm typing this message is from an HP desktop tower computer, an HPE-170t model to be specific which I bought back in May of the year 2010 and it originally came with 64 bit Windows 7. It still has the original memory in it from then which is 16 GB. The processor in it is an Intel i7 which has a speed of (2.80). And I use an ethernet cable, not wifi, to connect to the internet.

I live in a small rural town, population is around 1300 people, in southeast Texas and my ISP is Comcast/Xfinity. I have an internet download speed of 328 Mbps with an upload speed of 12 Mbps. This desktop tower computer runs 64 bit Linux Mint 20.1 (Ulyssa) Xfce without any problems on a nearly eleven year old computer at the time of this post. I use the generic Nouveau graphics driver for linux Mint. The kernel I'm using in this computer is (5.4.0-66). The hard drive Mint is installed on is an old fashioned 7200 rpm platter drive (Western Digital). Mint runs fast on this old beast.

So my computer is two years older than your's. If you have enough memory with a good internet speed from your ISP when using your wifi, in my opinion, you should not have any problems using Mint 20 or (20.1).
Linux Mint 21.3 (Virginia) Xfce
MX Linux 23.2 (Libretto) Xfce
Linux Debian 12.5 (Bookworm) Xfce

If you're content with LM 19.3, and there's no overly compelling features of LM 20.x for you, then stay with LM 19.3.

Speaking for myself, my "main" computers typically stay with whatever the latest x.3 version of LM is. As of today, that's LM 19.3, and sometime in early 2022, they'll migrate to LM 20.3.
