Nothing Serious, just a Quirk when saving images to Desktop

Post by AZgl1800 »

I like to keep my desktop relatively clean looking....
all the major folders of interest ( short term ) on the left with shortcuts.
the rest of the screen is usually devoid of anything, except the theme.

occasionally when saving an Image file to the desktop, it drops into the slot below the /backup drive icon,
and shoves all of the lower icons down.

Wish I knew what is causing this, it just irks me when things get moved w/o me asking.

It doesn't ask because you've already told it.

The Desktop is just another directory so its sort order is whatever you've set it to.

True, but i should hope it does not follow changes in the sort order for other directories?

I have it set for Customize,

I think I see what is happening....
I tried to set it to "NO SORT" but that is not an option, so Name is the least objectionable.
But, it does not sort after I place them where I want them.
just when a new file is dropped onto the desktop.

This problem happens to me too and I have just accepted that nemo has its quirks.

If in another program I choose "save to desktop" sometimes the file moves other icons around, sometimes it just lands on top of another icon and they are both in the same space until I move one and the other remains.

If I drag and drop from a nemo window to the desktop the icon/file will be positioned, not where I put it, but three spaces to the right, which is usually behind the window where I dragged it from.

These things have been happening to me since day one with LM, in all versions, 18, 19 and now 20. It makes me wonder many thoughts which I will save for now because I need to get coffee.

I believe the sort parameters only work if you choose to arrange/sort the icons, then those parameters decide how to sort them. If you choose no arrange then there is no sort. That is how I interpret it.

When I change the settings in Nemo it doesn't change them in the Desktop (pic). I have to right click the Desktop and choose Customize. Plugging a drive in shifts them with any setting it seems if usin Auto. Turning off Auto seems to make a drive icon take the next free space, but sometimes the overlap. I just leave the default and have nice Desktop wallpaper with no icons and keep them in one folder in the Home directory. Otherwise I just use launchers in Favorites and the Panel.

Hey absque fenestris, what did you use to build that image, and in particular, to add the lines with arrow heads?

Most likely Screenshot and Gimp.

No, no - just Ksnip ... and Vivaldi with splitted windows.

When I want to make arrows like that, I use Pinta.

Yes. You don't need a screenshot tool to draw an arrow on an image. You just need it in case you want to take a screenshot, and Mint comes with a screenshot tool pre-installed.
(I'm not completely sure what you are asking here.)

Nothing earth-shattering - only with Ksnip it's one less work step ...

Okay, in that case, my answer is:
Yes. Without a screenshot tool.
