Linux mint sponsors.
While I was browsing through linux mint sponsors, I found that there are 5 sponsors from casinos.
I know open source software needs monetization but can we stick to clean money please? casinos are basically stealing that is legal but completely unethical and contributes to destruction of lives of lots of people. Making money from people suffering doesn't seem right.
This is just my opinion, you may agree with me or not, but please stay respectful
edit: Seems that I am alone in this, most people are ok with it.

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
Contributing to Linux Mint is entirely a personal choice. If the Mint team didn't have casinos contributing but had alcohol distilleries as sponsors would you still feel the same way? Alcohol is a "legal" drug.

I was checking if some ethics are being taken into consideration while accepting sponsors...Larry78723 wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 8:32 am Contributing to Linux Mint is entirely a personal choice. You are free to disagree.
Yes alcohol is bad too and I would not accept it either

I would rather the casinos give their money to Linux distros than Microsoft.TD15 wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 8:26 am While I was browsing through linux mint sponsors, I found that there are 5 sponsors from casinos.
This really made me feel disgusted. I know open source software needs monetization but can we stick to clean money please? casinos are basically stealing that is legal but completely unethical and contributes to destruction of lives of lots of people.
Some people may see this as ok, but for me, this is very bad ethically.
I think the mint team should not accept monetization from such sources.

Are you willing to make up the shortfall if mint decided to adopt your ethical stance?I think the mint team should not accept monetization from such sources.

Gambling is something people love doing. Casinos are only a service here and they are paying a lot of tax money.

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
The phrase "clean money" is very subjective. One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Let's look at this from a psychological perspective. Would those people's lives be destroyed if they woke today and refused to ever go into a casino again?
People are destroyed by the choices they make.. it's not the fault of the casinos.
I think I was both respectful and educational

Amen for that!! Besides, it's not like the casinos are sticking guns to men and women's privates and demand they gamble. It's overall no different than buying scratch off lotto tickets at a gas station if you want to get technical. I don't do it, but that doesn't mean I don't understand that such things have brought massive money to the state. If some of that money goes to Linux dev teams like Mint, bring it..because all that means is that is it one more source of income for the Mint team....and one more reason why they are able to keep this wonderful project going and keeping me the hell away from winwoesrevmacian wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 9:27 amI would rather the casinos give their money to Linux distros than Microsoft.TD15 wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 8:26 am While I was browsing through linux mint sponsors, I found that there are 5 sponsors from casinos.

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
If it bothers you that much, don't use Mint.
I don't think a distro the size of Mint (it's a lot smaller than many users here think) can afford to be that fussy about sponsors.

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
Thanks for your opinion (and being respectful).
Yes it is the person's fault of destroying his life, but it doesn't feel ok to benefit from people destroying their lifes due to bad decisions. That is my whole point.
Re: Linux mint sponsors.
They are just 5 out of about a hundred without mentioning donations. I think it won't make that much of a difference.
Re: Linux mint sponsors.
This seems to be a matter of ethics with you. Let's talk about that, shall we? You want the Mint project to accept only "clean money", refusing casino money as it is unethical. Isn't it also equally unethical for you, someone not associated with the project, to attempt to control where the Mint project derives its funds?
And, yes, I always ask the difficult questions because it makes people think. The difference between ignorance and intelligence.. is thinking.

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
I am not controlling by any means the source of money, I am just giving my opinion on the matter. It is a matter of ethics and giving advice is allowed right? Everyone is free to agree or not. And I made it clear in my first post.revmacian wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 11:17 amThis seems to be a matter of ethics with you. Let's talk about that, shall we? Are your principles are so vital to you that you will cease using an operating system derived from "dirty" money?

Re: Linux mint sponsors.
This will stop me from contributing (I am C a developer, soon I will learn Python and GTK+, I was planning to contribute to mint), but I will keep using it because it is a free open source project, or probably switch to Pop OS, I hesitate between these 2 distros.cliffcoggin wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 2:31 pm Are your principles are so vital to you that you will cease using an operating system derived from "dirty" money?
Seems that no one care about money source as long as it is legal, even if it comes from people suffering...
Re: Linux mint sponsors.
Those people you think are "suffering" could end what they're doing anytime they want and simply walk away. I know many people who frequent gambling establishments, they call it "entertainment". Keep in mind that you could be rallying around people who don't want any part of your belief system.TD15 wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 10:36 pmThis will stop me from contributing (I am C a developer, soon I will learn Python and GTK+, I was planning to contribute to mint), but I will keep using it because it is a free open source project, or probably switch to Pop OS, I hesitate between these 2 distros.cliffcoggin wrote: ⤴Sun Jun 20, 2021 2:31 pm Are your principles are so vital to you that you will cease using an operating system derived from "dirty" money?
