Mint 21
Ok, the thread for all things Mint 21 which is coming this year. While I love Mint 20.3, I am excited about Mint 21. So what do we want to see in Mint 21? For me, the only real thing would be HiDPI and Kernel 5.15/5.17.

Re: Mint 21
I'd like to see proper fractional scaling like KDE does (in increments of 6.25%). Cinnamon sourly misses it.
Re: Mint 21
1. I second the LTS 5.15 or 5.17 kernel as the standard
2. Offer 5.4 LTS for older machines
3. More fonts (add an equivalent to Mac OS SF and Windows Segue UI to Software Manager with license agreement like MScorefonts)
4. Put legacy themes back in the original package (although it's a very simple command lol)
... probably some other ideas, but these are the ones I have off the top of my head.

i only have 2 things in mind.
1- better integration of gnome themes for cinnamon.
2-let LinuxMint stay away from snapd, again and forever.

Re: Mint 21
Based on the slow download problem they had with the 20.3 upgrade, they'd need to find additional server capacity to handle a netinstl version.

unfortunately, this is also true!Larry78723 wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:03 amBased on the slow download problem they had with the 20.3 upgrade, they'd need to find additional server capacity to handle a netinstl version.
one question? ubuntu 22.04 will be strongly snap centric. how will the Mint team handle this?
Re: Mint 21
I think that they will handle it the way they always have, which is to disable snaps, and let us choose to install them or not (for me NOT!!)ne0h wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 30, 2022 3:13 pmunfortunately, this is also true!Larry78723 wrote: ⤴Sun Jan 30, 2022 9:03 amBased on the slow download problem they had with the 20.3 upgrade, they'd need to find additional server capacity to handle a netinstl version.

Re: Mint 21
Of course they handle it but it may be far bigger effort than before - Gnome 42 and Wayland are as foreign as they sound.

Re: Mint 21
my true dream? A linux mint based solely on debian stable, with the mint tools we are all used to and love. A linux mint where developers only have LMDE to think about.
Re: Mint 21
Peppermint also switched to Debian

Re: Mint 21
here, mxlinux has always been based on debian. but peppermint is a prime example of a distro ditching ubuntu for debian. emmabuntus did the same. it was initially based on ubuntu, and then moved to debian. and deepin as well if I'm not mistaken. It would be great if Mint focused solely on LMDE.Bolle1961 wrote: ⤴Sat Feb 05, 2022 1:03 pm Peppermint also switched to Debian

Re: Mint 21
I am now, at 1400 USA CST trying to download updates.
Painful is not adequate enough to express how I feel about it.
25 to 50 Kbps????
I changed from the Default server to the fastest on in the list, which proclaims to be a whole whopping 689 Kbps,
and that did not improve anything.
Ever since LM20.3 was released, if not before that point in time....
Upgrades are something that I put off until I go to bed....
I have watched Earth Worms crawl faster than this.
EDIT: I thought this was in a Slow Server thread, at least my search proclaimed that...
sorry about "where this post is".... but I am not going to double post it.
Admin can put it where it belongs.

Re: Mint 21
How about a single ISO that gives a choice of DE (Xfce, Mate, Cinnamon, KDE) during install? Seems like it would be easier to maintain by the LM team.
No to the net install. Not just because of extra load on the servers, but because a net install can't work if you're offline, or if you go offline while installing and corrupts the install.
YES to the minimal install, which means smaller ISO and faster to get system up and running. The software that's installed by default isn't very bloated as is, but it would be nice to be able to choose what user programs I want, say if I preferred something other than Firefox or LibreOffice.
