One Click Snapshot ISO

Post by roncraig »

Love the way MXLinux has the 'snapshot' tool that will take your current live system and create an ISO out of it. Since it is Debian-based distro, I wonder how many peo0ple here would be interested in having something similar for Mint? I'm highly interested.

Hi,

While mx-snapshot is specific to MX Linux, it is possible to do the same in Ubuntu with systemback.

See https://linuxhint.com/create-iso-curren ... on-ubuntu/ (search for "Using the Systemback Utility" in the web page).

Regards,

MN

As a follow-up...

I ended up using Clonezilla which works for my situation quite well. All I need now is a fresh install with btrfs and I'd be a happy camper.

MikeNovember,
I struggled with Systemback for 2 days without success. It will give me a clone of everything however I only want the update of my system that is: programs and my personal (visual) changes like what's on the panel.

What do you mean by "clone of everything" ?
as Systemback does not touch any user's personal files, such as Documents, Pictures, Music, etc.

Rick,
The original Cinnamon 20.3 is 2.1Gb. The smallest that Systemback can make for me is 9Gb. My added files couldn't possibly be 7Gb. What am I doing incorrectly?

Hi Rick,
attached screenshot...
systemback.png
I eliminated everything in the two categories at the very top and I STILL got a 6+Gb file!

What am I doing wrong?

Rick,
I tried to do the 6.1Gb anyway and got this:

Systemback refuses to recognise any USB I attach:

rickNS,
I took out the Trash, I deleted the cache, I deleted the Systemback file and I started again. The resultant file is 6.45Gb!!!

How do you do it? ie, what folders/files do you include?

rickNS,
Very interesting.
After 3+ years on this and other forums I have come to realise that experienced 'techie' users forget that we non-techie users simply need the complete information to make sense of your instructions. Shorthand may be OK when instructing a member who knows terminal commands but believe it or not, those members represent precious few in the real world. This is one of the main reasons that Linux is frightening to Windows users. If Mint has any hope of 'capturing' seriously larger numbers of new-comers then this issue will need to be addressed.

Cinnamon21: I wanted to practice BEFORE I install 21.

Did not know I came across as "techie", cause I'm not.

As far as

How many of those are making custom .iso's ?
