Finally I just shut it down and rebooted. Apparently it was really done despite showing as still running. Not a first for this issue

Try different mirrors, I have started using French and German ones recently because the UK ones are currently slow too. Sounds ridiculous but it's happened, possibly additional bandwidth demand from the Mint 21 beta and subsequent launch hype.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Yup, probably slow main server because of release overload. Switch to a mirror, at least for the Mint packages.

I got 20Kb/s updating to Una from Uma... have changed my mirror to local one. when doing package update its normal at least 500-1,2Mb/s but when updgrading to una its like I don't use mirror site at all. 20kb/s and often drop lower.

yep, and it still happens now n then, like today, it's been several hours just trying to get Updates, but once again,
packages.linuxmint.com vera is barely crawling at a pace that my old US Robotics 2600 baud Modem would be excelling at.?, (and no, it's not even about that stoopid lagging Firefox update), -but I guess it's because it's (sorta) free so we can never say it's shameful.?

I'd rather say it's shameful that you haven't switched to a mirror server yet.

Well, you shouldn't have. The main server serves (pun intended) only two purposes: the first is to feed the mirrors, and the second is to give users a neutral starting point for the selection of the best mirror for them.

It's simply not meant to be used as permanent software source. When you do use it like that anyway, your only advantage will be the warm fuzzy feeling of having updates a couple of hours earlier than the mirror users. Which has almost no practical security benefit. The annoyance of slow updates however, is very real, very bothersome and will keep plaguing you....
