Hiyall,
Upgraded 3 laptops to Cinnamon 21 using the upgrade path. No problems. Nada.
The big test will come next week when I upgrade the main computer.

I only do clean installs.

Downloaded the ISO, validated signatures, and flashed to a thumb drive, etc., then rebooted (same as I've done for the last several versions).

It took almost 2 minutes to boot. Once booted, it was slow and the screen was glitchy.

I repeated the above with a different download, different thumb drive, etc., and got the same result.

I told it to install, thinking maybe it would clear up after it was a full install and all the updates were done.

Nope. Still slow and glitchy.

So I put 20.3 back on this machine (a 4 year old Dell business class laptop I've been using with Linux Mint already), and it's working fine.

So I will wait for version 22.

Hi
I only do clean installs.
Much the same here. I keep older partitions for a while. I can still boot the original 20.3, a copy of this partition with an in-place upgrade to 21,
and a 21 clean install. As far as I can tell the in-place upgrade is equal to the freshly installed 21.
Still--I have more confidence in the fresh install.
Your experiences with installation of 21 is uncommon and unexpected, particularly on a machine running 20.3 so well.
Perhaps the newer kernel-but imo a 4yr old machine should run it. Perhaps a grahic driver issue. I would want to explore this ahead of time.
Can you please post your inxi or system report--someone may be familiar with your problem.

Hiyall,
I upgraded 3 laptops last week without any issues.
Today I upgraded my main laptop and it also worked without issue. I also used Aptik as a way of retaining all the software and data, for that matter. It worked faultlessly. All I needed to do is enter a few usernames and passwords.
My only issue is VirtualBox and that'll be sorted before the end of the evening or tomorrow if I get tired.

I was not successful in getting Linux Mint 21 to work on my computer. I have a a year old Lenovo V14-IIL. I have been using Linux Mint since version 19. I tested Linux Mint 21 on a virtual machine and everything seemed to work fine. After Linux Mint 21 came out and the Upgrade tool was available, I updated to 21 from 20.3 which was working perfectly.

The update was registered as successful but when I booted into LM 21, I had no sound. I looked at the log and it gave me some suggestions to fix it but I demurred until I had more of my programs loaded. I added Dropbox and when it started updating, there was no progress. I went to the logs again and found an error saying that Linux Mint could not keep track of more than XXXX changes and it gave me language to fix the problem - worked fine after that. Then I added Kate Text Editor as a I do a lot of coding for a genealogy site and Kate is critical to the way I work. Kate started randomly crashing and I filed a crash report. I switched to Kate flatpak and while it seemed to be working OK, I couldn't access a browser to double check my work.

I reformatted my disk and loaded Linux Mint Debian Edition 5. I had a crash of Gnome Boxes when I first loaded it but nothing since. I have sound, Kate is working exactly as it should. LMDE 5 has recently had all the Mint 21 updates back ported so except for it being Debian rather than Ubuntu I can't really tell the difference. I am even running a 5.18 kernel so I have access to most of the new kernel changes.

For those having problems with LM 21 but want to access the new features, you may want to try LMDE 5.

Ok, just re-installed POP!_OS on the Darter Pro (Gen 2), and the USB-C Thunderbolt drives work perfectly. They worked fine under Mint 20.3, and other distros I installed on this laptop, so I do not understand why Mint 21 has an issue with ONLY this laptop. All others work great with Mint 21 and USB-C and USB-C/Thunderbolt work fine. I re-installed POP!_OS to check for firmware updates, there were none. This is an 11th gen intel with Xe graphics. So I know it is not Mint 21 it has to be this laptop. I might decide to put LMDE 5 on this one so both the Darter Pro laptops run LMDE 5.

On two computers, the Mint upgrade, disabled LibreOffice. At least one other person also had this problem. See the post: Libreoffice will not run
This issue has been solved. Read the post cited for full details. Basically, installed LibreOffice directly from the website, purged it; and reinstalled LibreOffice from the Mint repository. This evidently cleared whatever prevented the Mint repository version of LibreOffice from working.

I only have one drive in this one, so I am most likely going to install LMDE 5 on this one, maybe this weekend since I have chased it down to the laptop, NOT Mint. I am one of those odd people who have no problem installing on bare metal, and then re-installing if need be. But both USB-C ports work perfectly now. So odd.

I clean installed a properly checksum'd Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon .iso onto an external USB HDD last week for testing and evaluation.

I found that LM 21 currently has too many bugs which I am incapable of troubleshooting.

Thus, I'm staying with the more polished and stable Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon, pending a periodic review of Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon's progress.

Upgraded a laptop from 20.3 to 21 and had a few hiccups. Then the laptop died, so ... It could have been all hardware.

ivar wrote: Thu Aug 18, 2022 3:45 pm As for LM 21, I've done 2 upgrades. Bth just fine. Havent noticed much differences - things still works without fuzz. Biggest difference: Firefox with too many tabs open is now leaking memory at a slower rate than with 20.x and 5.4 series kernel
some more time with 21 now: no issues / bugs at all for me but looks like my current setup is a bit more resource hungry than 20.3, my 8 year old yoga2 i5 with 4 gb ram is running hotter + uses more cpu when viewing videos in firefox.
I'll reserve judement for later, as I've seen the same symptoms also for certain kernels + firefox versions when running 20.x

I had mixed results, on my laptop everything updated as described in the update instructions. On my two desktops it would not work. I tried to delete the "Foreign" files but must have deleted one too many because the installation had to be redone so I just went and did a clean install and now everything works.

plus1 for a clean install. But I also did an inplace upgrade for 20.3>21

Well, since I last posted in this thread on August 12th...

...absolutely nothing bad has happened.

Cinnamon continues to be a far more stable DE than Gnome 3.42, which some here may recall I used for several weeks when I installed Ubuntu 22.04 on my desktop.

I just installed Linux mint 21 Xfce from a DVD.

The install went without a hitch I then rebooted and updated my new install and then I decided to remove all of the default software I'll never need or use which was quite a bit and then install some software I use.

After a bit of setting things up the way I like and a bit of tweaking on my new Linux Mint 21 install everything seems to work okay.

Not much of a Linux Mint standard version user mostly used LMDE versions so I figured I'd give Linux Mint 21 Xfce a try and see what my experience is and so far so good.

I've changed my mind.

For all of its current minor faults, I've switched to Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon. Its improvements over LM 20.3 are too compelling for me to ignore.

I can only hope that the Linux Mint 21.1.iso will see a return of the needed verify media function. USB flash drives can develop errors over time.

Same here. Mint 21 is working just fine; so well that it's easy to forget that I upgraded at all.
