Linux Mint User in Waiting

Postby neubuseternus » Thu Jul 12, 2007 8:13 pm

Hi All.

As you can probably deduce from the subject line, I'm not yet a Mint user. I'm currently running MEPIS whech I switched to when I dumped SUSE following the "MicroVell" deal. I really like the MEPIS distro but I'm less than pleased with the way they treat their end users like second class members of the community. They don't even host a forum for end users any more but send users to other forums.

I have felt inexorably drawn to Mint for some time. The distro appears to have a lot going for it. I also really like the community here. I don't feel separated from the developers as I do on MEPIS and I like the overall friendly tone of the posts. I probably would have already made the switch to Mint except for the fact that the KDE version isn't out yet. I've tried Gnome on several occasions and it just doesn't suit me. I even downloaded the current version of Mint to check it out but still find Gnome, even with the enhancements offered by Mint, less than desirable than KDE.

So I'm patiently waiting for the KDE version to be released. Once that hits the mirrors, I will undoubtedly become a mint convert.

Well, I can sympathize, I've never been able to switch to Gnome - though Mint's version had me close to doing it.

If you're not afraid of reinstalling when Boo has the KDE version ready, you still can install KDE on top of Cassandra in the meantime... That's what I did as I'm not very patient

And, yes, from all the distros I've tried over the years, Clem is without doubt the most attentive developer to users' feedback I've ever seen, and the community the friendliest. So welcome! :D
I don't have a solution, but I do admire the problem.

I used to think the same and on SUSE I "of course" always used KDE ... but now that I switched to some Debian-based distros (Debian "Etch", Ubuntu 7.04, and Mint 3.0) I use GNOME everywhere and I actually quite like it :D

I've never been a huge KDE fan myself... I just don't like the ergonomics... but that's great you are interested in Mint. It's awesome!
