Useful Terminal Commands Everyone Should Know

Post by wildhawk »

I would like to know a list of Terminal Commands that everyone should know. I am new to Linux and Mint 8. I know there is useful information and tricks and quicker ways of processing things in the terminal. Please post your favorite command and what it does.

There are several very good "cheatsheets" online, I used to have a few bookmarked but have long ago lost them.

What I have done for 10 years is kept a file in /data called "terminal commands" but has expanded to scripts and short how-to's. Any time I had to google something I would paste the commands/directions to a new .odt and save it in this file. It has not only helped me easily find these commands again, but to also help others in various forums.

I use a combination of copying and pasting useful/interesting items into gedit and filing them on my harddrive and good,old-fashioned notebooks which I write things down in.
I can't always guarantee to find things instantly, but they are there...somewhere

You could use this

as a desktop reference

Howdy...

Favorite commands? Have to be 'grep' and 'less':

Examples:

  • 1. Display a list of all processes containing 'firefox' in the command line, but don't return the 'grep' process itself:
    • ps ax | grep -e 'firefox' | grep -v 'grep'
    2. Get ACPI-related events recorded in dmesg (case-insensitive), and display as a scrollable list:
    • grep -i -e 'acpi' /var/log/dmesg | less
    3. Find all logs that contain ACPI-related events (case-insensitive), and display their filenames:
    • cd /var/log ; sudo grep -l -i -e 'acpi' *
    4. Display how many times the OS has parked and unparked your laptop hard disk drive (requires that package 'smartmontools' be installed, replace 'sda' with 'hda' if your laptop has an older non-SATA drive, anything over 180,000 cycles indicates the drive may be nearing end-of-life - regardless of actual age):
    • sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Load_Cycle_Count
Happy hunting! :-)

You'll realise soon as I once did, every Linux user ends up saving/bookmarking many a reference sheet. Very handy things to have.

Couldn't get to it here, either. But there are a few others like it out there -- found some by playing around with some Google Images searches.

I found a 'huge' list of CLI/terminal/bash commands. Most which I'll never use ... but, I has them, none-the-less.

Linux MAN pages: An A-Z Index of the Bash command line for Linux.
