How did you get your Mint?

Post by tower »

I just wondered how Mint users obtained Mint to install on their computer.
Did you download, buy a magazine with a coverdisc etc?

I am curious because of the comments from many users on the forum who are in areas where broadband is not available or not affordable.
Downloading Mint or additional software may not be reliable for you due to connection problems
Maybe you have a download limit and a distro would use a lot of it up.

If it is coverdisc which magazine do you prefer?

The very first Linux OS distro was Ubuntu ... downloaded it off there Main site.

After that, every one of the assorted distros, and all my Mint installs have been via Torrent.

Torrents often take longer to download, but I know it will download ... even if I somehow, loose my connection or if have to interrupt the download for some reason.

For quite a while now I've been using a couple that are advertised on DistroWatch: osdisc.com and linuxcd.org. Low prices. I got CDs from those two places because until recently I was using dial-up. For Ubuntu, I've just been using Shipit.

I use mirrors for all my downloads and not always local ones. I got my copy of Mint 8 Main Ed. from the HEAnet site in Dublin, Ireland within an hour of its first appearing there.

I've downloaded from mirrors all over the U.S. and Canada. I go where the download is fastest. Sometimes I'll try two or three mirrors before I settle on one to use.

At this moment I'm downloading SimplyMepis 8.4.97 - b5 from the University of West Virginia.

I'm on dial-up so I take my laptop to a WIFI location near by. I have had good results with no errors but it may take a hour or more. I'm curious how fast a cable modem and a new super computer can download a file that fills a CD? :?:

I generally test a few of the mirror sites until I find one that's being particularly speedy, then download from there.

i usually go through the torrent route so as not to burden the mint servers. you won't find linux magazines here afaik, since the country is pretty much bound to windows slavery.

My distros tend to come from cover disks because my download allowance is quite low.
So it is a matter of waiting for my favourite distro to appear on the cover :(

The computer doesn't have as much to do with it as the Cable connection. How fast you will download the file/s depends on what speed your connection is. Cable isn't just cable. There are alot of different connection speeds. Like with my carrier there is only 2 speeds available, 1.5mbps and 4mbps. But, Just up the road a few miles Comcast takes over and they offer up to 60mbps I believe it is. (Thats mega bits per second)

I'm on the 4mbps cable and depending on the server I'm downloading from, I can download Mint in about 20 minutes. The KDE 1.2gig took almost an hour to get. The connection was slower to the server.

I'm on dialup...
so I got my CD from On-Disk.com (when Mint 8 was RC1). Sometimes I've used Frozentech.com as well.

A friend told me about it, I asked him to install it on a seperate partition, I fell in love, and deleted Windoze completely.

And they all lived happily ever after

I acquired Linux Mint on a CD in a magazine I bought. I had gone out looking to get a new free version of Linux, so I obviously checked all the computing magazines and one contained a review of Linux Mint and a free boot CD. I've used it since.

I have received Ubuntu, Suse, Kbuntu, linux puppy and Linux Mint 7 from Linux Journal magazine. Decided I like Linux Mint the best so downloaded Linux Mint 8 and KDE 8.

Linux Journal is the only magazine available at my local grocery store.

I've had excellent luck downloading my Mint via torrent. I only got started with Mint on Mint 7, so Mint was already pretty popular by that time. As a result, the torrents have been very speedy for me.

Most recently, with the Mint 8 Fluxbox CE torrent I had the ISO completely downloaded in under 20 minutes!
