As bad as windows is, ready to go back.

Post by pshdsa » Thu Mar 24, 2011 10:47 pm

Unbelievable. Download Firefox 4 and Linux mint 10 will not let me install it. Not so in Windows. It seems that if it is not resident in Mint, then it cannot be installed. Never had this problem in Windows. Someone new to Linux does not have a clue, and the forum is a joke, unless you have the patience to read the whole thing to find the little nugget you need, if you find it at all. Tell me one good reason to put up with all the frustration in Linux and sell me on the idea that MInt will cause Windows to go away. Dare you.

Unbelievable.

Naw you see this all the time, no prior request for help with the problem, no background just the old I am going back to windows.

Download Firefox 4 and Linux mint 10 will not let me install it.

Dude its software. Find the correct instructions, follow them and you are ready to go. Which instruction set did you follow?

Not so in Windows.

Make yourself happy, life is too short.

It seems that if it is not resident in Mint, then it cannot be installed.

Not so, too many people are using it.

Never had this problem in Windows.

Make yourself happy, life is too short.

Someone new to Linux does not have a clue, and the forum is a joke, unless you have the patience to read the whole thing to find the little nugget you need, if you find it at all.

Your right clueless.

Tell me one good reason to put up with all the frustration in Linux...

It keeps us amused?

...and sell me on the idea that MInt will cause Windows to go away.

Not my idea. I don't care one way or the other what happens with Windows

Dare you.

OK you win, I wont argue with you. Enjoy

I wasn't going to update to FF4 before the final version is released but I just had to in order to see how hard it really is.

Well it seems you're right, this was unbelievably difficult.

Firstly I had to google for a how to which took literally about a second of my precious life.

I then had to discern which sites I trusted but as I'd used some before I trusted http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-instal ... g-ppa.html

Finally I had to type three (a whole whopping three) lines of code into the terminal, again taking precious seconds of my life. (I did save some by using copy and paste rather than typing manually though).

Lo and behold I now have FF4 working but as you said this is just way too difficult for some people.
I had to be able to read, follow some instructions and, well, that was about it really

All that when brilliant old Windows is sat round the corner ...

Of course there were several media players offered, but after comparing them, VLC proved to be the best to play audio dvd's and movies. Linux forces you to learn or quit, I think. But having switched from Vista to Linux just yesterday, Linux Mint 10 makes the crossover almost pain free. It is not as convenient as Windows, but not bad at all, and good enough, as Windows is bad enough, to warrant the change. I'm sticking with it.

What i can say is... LOL

edit - posted from FF4 which ermmm takes me several minutes to download from mozilla site, another several sec to extract it, another several sec to create a launcher for it in mint menu, WOW..so damn hard!

Dare you? riggght, with that ineptness you must also actually struggle with windows once in awhile as well, also I'd like to point out how MISINFORMED you actually are. Linux and its derivatives NEVER at anytime said it was going to replace M$ and windblowz. it is merely an option. After searching my files and my conscience I can not even fathom were you would come off with that kind of statement, unless point-of-fact you are just in a mood and trolling, never-the-less if you continue to be THAT misinformed linux wont work for you!!! And in the future windows may complicate your life as well...........

Here is my quarter, can i cross the bridge now?

For the clueless OP.

This much code would probably give him carpel tunnel syndrome since he prefers Windows..

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firefox ubufox

I dare say that someone new to Windows or OSX wouldn't either, since the concept of downloading would be foreign to them.

"Linux mint 10 will not let me install it" - wrong.
" It seems that if it is not resident in Mint, then it cannot be installed." - wrong.
"read the whole thing to find the little nugget you need" - correct. Do you read an entire dictionary to get the definition of say, "Immature"?
"if you find it at all" - correct and incorrect. Some people never learn. Where you read is just as important as what you read.
"Tell me one good reason to put up with all the frustration in Linux" - Here's 5 - Viruses, Intruders, Spyware, Trojans Adware
"sell me on the idea" - No. You are already convinced that Linux is Not Windows (and we completely agree) , so there is no argument or rationale great enough.
Linux is not for sale.

Now, does your Mommy know you're playing with computers?

Well, I'm hoping that the OP managed to get FF4 installed okay. There's a few ways to go about it, some of which have been mentioned here already. Good luck with it, pshdsa, it shouldn't be all that hard to get it installed.

If you think this forum is a joke, try Microsoft's help forum sometime.

I'm fairly clueless about Linux and I have been able to easily find answers to almost any question I've had. If I cant I ask and usually get the answer in a very short time.
