gnome 3 in mint 11?bad idea

Post by podagee »

has anyone tried gnome 3 in mint 11?i tried it and thought it was a bad idea.honestly thought it was terrible.gnome 3 in ubuntu 11.10 was actually pretty nice beside the fact that oneiric is terribly a heavy distro in my opinion.i hope mint 12 cleans it up real nice after all gnome 3 aint that bad at all.its sort of like unity except without the bar.

A nice comparison of memory and CPU utilization of various desktops: http://www.renewablepcs.com/about-linux ... me-or-xfce

No surprise, KDE is the memory hog, Unity is both a memory and enormous CPU hog, and while GNOME 3.0 Shell is not using more memory than GNOME 2.x, it needs a lot more CPU.

Code: Select all

Desktop Memory CPU
-------------------- ------ ----
KDE 4.6 363 MB 4 %
Unity (Ubuntu 11.04) 271 MB 14 %
GNOME 3.0 Shell 193 MB 10 %
GNOME 2.x 191 MB 1 %
Xfce 4.8 144 MB 10 %
LXDE 85 MB 1 %

Thank you for posting this.

I've done my own research with CPU and find KDE to be the most efficient by far.

Here are my rankings from the most efficient to least efficient:

KDE
Gnome 2
Gnome 3
Xfce
LXDE

On my machine KDE will display an idle of 100% and every 10 seconds might dip down to 99.9%. With LM12 on Gnome Shell it stays at around 99.8% and drops to 99.5% making KDE, on my machine, about 4x more efficient while idle. I remember installing Xfce and LXDE and seeing them hover around 98.5%.

As for Arch Bang, I've yet to see a distro that is more memory efficient and functional at the same time. Try playing flash videos on it. It's amazingly efficient!

Uhm. Idle time is not that interesting, it is when it is doing something that is interesting. KDE is heavy when it actually needs to do something
