StartUbuntu - The Perfect Solution for Windows XP Users!

Hello Linux Mint Community :)

I'd like to post about this project: StartUbuntu

I believe Ubuntu and its official variants should not be the only projects/communities involved but other communities based on Ubuntu as well. Why based on Ubuntu? because, we all know that Ubuntu based systems, by far, the best start point for a new comer to Linux World. Easy, Simple, Stable, etc.

If truth to be told, there are few active members working on StartUbuntu Projects. We do need more. We are starting from a very noble aim and goal, that is to help as many Windows XP users as possible. I am so much against Microsoft Plan to force their loyal users either to upgrade their system or buy new hardware. They haven't even mentioned Linux as another alternative and that is why, StartUbuntu has been found, so it will deliver that message to Windows XP Users.

What do you think?

Thank you!

I looks like a nice project. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you are focusing in Lubuntu mainly. In my humble opinion, To hook Windows (or Mac) users it must get through the eyes first. It should be an eye catching DE. The looks. As plain as it sounds. LXDE is not specially eye catching. Sorry for the criticism, but performance and light weight aside, it always makes me think in a late 90s OS just for the looks. If you want to compete with Aero or Aqua, Unity or KDE are surely better choices. They can tempt newcomers to want to look what's beyond that good looking desktop. Then it cames the rest, but the first sight/contact is all that important.

I know, So many XP users probaly have old computers, but even without tweaks and optimizations after a fresh install in aged computers, the heavy DEs on Linux perform better than XP.

Lxde looks just good. Eyecandy?? Win XP has no eyecandy, so that can't be a problem.
As most people know who know me or read my blog know I don't like ubuntu but I really like Lubuntu.

Besides that, starting april 8th 2014 is to late. Start the campaign now, and don't focus on 1 distribution but let people know that there are several distributions and DE's to choose from ( a bit like the blogpost I mentioned, I'm not a writer so there must be some one around that can do that job better  )

Of course, XP is anything but eye catching... What I tried to say is that XP users are forced to switch to a newer Win Aero loaded version, aren't they? IMHO, it can be a problem.

I use AV Linux regularly, which is a Debian with LXDE audio oriented distro. I'm used to it and all I can say is that LXDE is too crude, rudimentary and spartan. I can live with it, but man (no offense intended), it's like getting back to the Mac OS 9 days. I switched from Mac OS X to Linux last january. No way back, but honestly. If someone were trying to persuade me to try Linux based on a LXDE distro a year ago, I would quit in less than a minute. Personally, if not using one of the "heavy" DEs, I'd much prefer a windows manager better than LXDE and similar stuff. But that's just me.

I like the options this distro offers! It's great that LXDE can be so versatile as to "look like" more than one desktop, including Mac.

For simplicity as well as speed I like Xfce on my old computer (formerly a XP machine). Xfce also happens to be the choice of a couple of distros aimed at little kids, too. I think that speaks well of it's simplicity too.

But it's a cool idea, to choose between three "ready made" configurations of LXDE.

This is an interesting thread, and I commend the ideas and efforts of those who are involved in the StartUbuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/Communi ... tartUbuntu) project. Whether they will be successful -- time will tell.

However, at the bottom of their project page is a link to a YouTube video. Watching that was well worth the time spent reading through the posts in this thread. For those of you who didn't notice it, here is the link:

I got 2 windows xp users hooked on LM 15 w/ cinnamon and they love it. They transitioned no problem. But any linux OS thats easy to use, is good, for beginners.
