What's in Your Virtualbox?

Post by SC23 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 6:33 pm

My main distro of choice is Mint KDE but I decided to try some other distros in VMs just to give them a whirl.

The last week I have loaded up Ubuntu, Debian, ReactOS, Android, Mint Debian Cinnamon and Mate, and am waiting out a Mint XFCE at the moment. As far as performance, ReactOS was lightening fast but pretty much useless other than booting.. About the same with Android. Straight up Debian with LXDE from their live Disk once installed was the fastest of the usable flavors so far. Cinnamon was pretty sluggish and Ubuntu was a dog. Everybody else fell somewhere in between.

I know ya get performance hits left and right for playing VM but its just for looking around to see what other OSs are up to..

So.. What's in your Virtualbox (or emulator of choice)?

At this time of writing, I'm using VMWare Workstation for:

Fedora 21 Workstation
OpenSUSE 13.2 KDE
OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 (unfortunately there's no 3D Hardware Acceleration support for OS X in either VMWare OR Virtualbox)
Windows 10 Tech Preview

I'm also running Windows 95B in DosBox, and dual-booting Mint 17.1 (Cinnamon 64-bit, Mate 32-bit) with Windows 7 on two different laptops (but that's besides the point).

I use it mainly for testing the new editions of Mint with a special focus on LMDE2 at the moment.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

No use of writing it here since it changes every time the wind changes direction.
I see something, download it, install it in a VM, test it for while and as soon as I find something I don't like or which doesn't work I delete the whole file.
I have tried all major Linux distros that way and every time I return to Mint KDE simply because it just works.
Yes, other DE's like XFCE and LXDE are a bit faster, but they can't even be in KDE's shadow regarding looks and feel. That's why I love KDE so much.

CentOS 6.6
CentOS 7
Fedora 20
Fedora 21
Fedora 22 Alpha
Linux Mint 17.1
LMDE
openSUSE
Scientific Linux
Ubuntu 14.04 Server
Ubuntu Gnome LTS
Voyager 14.04 X
Windows 7
Windows XP

Within this list there are multiple instances of some of these distributions. Currently 25 virtual machines total. I like to use virtual machines as test beds for my bash scripts, so I might have a 32 bit and a 64 bit version of one or more of these VMs. These are throw away operating systems that I reproduce by cloning a "master" installation.

I also like to see what some of the other desktop managers are like without installing a ton of stuff I probably won't want on my host machine. That said, the Fedora instances are many, like 10, some LXDE, some XFCE, Gnome, KDE etc.

Then there's the curiosity / boredom factor. What's this Ubuntu thing really all about? And what's this? Voyager 14.04x? Let's install that!
I'm always keeping an eye on Distrowatch to see what the latest and greatest distribution is.

No idea why I even keep the Windows VM's around. Guess I don't want to lose touch with where it all started for me.

Windows XP, to let me run InDesign, Photoshop and CorelDraw. This VM is not connected to the Internet and it rolls along just fine.

Three years ago (say), you would also have found at anyone time two or three other distros that I was learning, playing with or auditioning. But not now. I am honestly so satisfied with Mint's LTS releases that I am no longer spending time on the lookout for alternatives.

In an odd way this is a shame, as I learned a lot from experimenting with different distros in VB - but I never really had time to, even then, and I'm happy not spending the time now!

I can't run anything in virtualbox (too little ram), but I do have Windows 3.1 in DOSBox, if that counts. ;)
