Your feel good story for the day... Language Alert

Post by Jwithquestions »

This morning the phone rings. I hear my husband grumble and then answer it.

His voice sounds very serious as he talks to the person on the other end of the line. I hear him start his computer and he is still talking on the phone. He is describing some things on the computer screen.

After several minutes of this exchange, I hear him talking about his computer has an icon that is labeled "Computer" not "My Computer".

He then delivers the final blow, telling the "Microsoft technician" that his computer runs Linux.

"Stuff your Linux up your ass!" was the retort of the failed scammer.

Despicable criminals, mainly victimizing defenceless older people.... such phone calls are all too common in The Netherlands.

Best reply that I've ever heard of: keep a referee whistle next to your phone. When they call, talk very, very softly. Then suddenly blow that whistle as loud as you can, close to the phone mouthpiece.

These calls are common in Australia, i often troll and ridicule these people who call.

One time it went down like this:
Me: Hello you've reached #######, this is ####### speaking...

Scammer: Hello sir, i am responding to a call about your computer, this is the Microsoft technical department.

Me: Oww okay, and how i can i help you today?

Scammer: Yes can you please go to your computer and open your web browser.

Me: Your web browser is faulty? Tell me what's happening with it.

Scammer: No sir, i need you to open internet explorer.

Me: Listen buddy, if you don't tell me what's wrong with your computer i can't help you out.

Scammer: This is tech support-

Me: No THIS is tech support.

Scammer: *pauses* *hangs up*

Now I have to find my whistle. :D

Sometimes the scammers are not very good at what they do:
"Hello, I'm from Windows... blah blah blah blah..."

Had a whistle for years next to the phone.
Last time they called, they asked me if "Microsoft Services" was 'running', Whatever the hell that is.
I said no.
Hang up.

It's sad. I imagine because of extreme poverty and desperation we may see even MORE scammers in the future.

There are plenty of countries where the money just isn't coming in, people have no work available and turn to this trickery to get fed.

I've strung those scammers along a couple of times myself. It's amusing to see how long you can keep them on the line, wasting their time.
