To those that don't know what role Ian played in the early days of Linux and open source I suggest to read this part of the Debian project history: https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/proj ... ro.en.html.

What one man can set in motion...

Ian deserves a place in the tech Pantheon right along side Jobs, Gates and Torvalds. His contribution to tech can simply not be overstated and to see his bright light snuffed out so young is a tragedy.
What a legacy he has left us with.
Goodbye Ian, thanks for the code!

I only wish he could have seen this outpouring of sympathy. It's unfortunate that these feelings are only expressed once a person is gone. From everything I have read, Ian was a stand-up guy with a lot of important accomplishments.

Sir Isaac Newton said that if he saw further than others, it was from standing on the shoulders of giants. Ian Murdock was one of those giants upon whose shoulders we in the Linux/Open Source software community stand.

Terrible and saddening to think he might have killed himself.

I would encourage anyone in that situation to try and live on despite harsh and seemingly unbeatable externalities.

Truly shocking and sad. I know he had been away from "his" Debian project for many years now, but it was unquestionably HIS vision that made Debian what it was - and what it is, for all of us who love distributions ultimately based on Debian such as this one.
