Ubuntu 16.04, Linux Mint 18; can I still use upstart?

2 questions:
Will Ubuntu continue to maintain upstart, given the switch to systemd?
Can you switch out systemd for upstart after installing LM 18?

I have been using systemd on Debian (tracking testing) for +/- 2 years and it is not the monster some claim it to be. Most of the objections I have read are based on principle and not performance. I guess I have fewer principles then some.

Upstart will continue to be maintained during the support period of the releases that used it; aside from earlier Ubuntu releases also earlier RHEL/CentOS releases used it. The maintainers of those distro would address security issues at least. However it looks like the last feature release for upstart was mid 2014, aside from fix releases. Development looks to have slowed down, also the developer mailinglist is hardly used these days.

So yes, the upstart package is in the Ubuntu 16.04 repositories but it looks set to slowly wither due.

Hi xenopeek,

Thanks for the reply. :D

Did someone split this post off to a new subject? I only ask because this post was a reply in another thread.

Ah sorry, yes I did. The post was on the topic announcing the name of Linux Mint 18 which I figured wasn't the best place to discuss what happens to Ubuntu's Upstart and what that means for Linux Mint.

There might be a remote possibility, that Linux Mint 18 to be released with SysVinit or an alternative system OpenRC how to start ?? Systemd by over me to try to convince me does not end, you call me "fool" or "stubborn".... Best Regards.-
