Monochrome Laser Printer ?

Post by Lucap » Wed Jul 26, 2017 3:18 am

I'm done with inkjet as i never print in Colour yet the Carts still run out.

Is there any Brand of monochrome laser printer that stands out from the rest for its linux support as i've seen many complaints over the years of people having Cups issues with off-centre printing alignment and such ?

I've seen people in the past mention a Toner Saver option to print in a lighter text , is that all printers or a particular brand that has that function?

Thanks

Prices of toner vary a lot and it's annoying that some have a combined Toner and Drum.

My Samsung SCX-3405FW works fine with Mint 18, 18.1, and 18.2
You do have to install the Samsung driver.
I love it. I have had it for two and a half years, and am still using the ink cartridge that came with it new. (I print fewer than 10 pages per month.) With an inkjet, I would have had to spend more than $100 for ink in that time, due to the ink drying out.

Funny enough i've just been looking at Samsung as they look compact and cheap.

I'm cool with installing a driver as i would imagine it would be better than just using a Cups generic setting.

I've been using a Brother HL-2170W since May 2008. One of the best computer related purchases I've ever made.

Found the biggest savings in selecting the high yield toner. Not much more in cost for getting more printed pages.

I have an HP LaserJet Pro P-1102W, which is by no means a high-end unit, but it gets the job done, and replacement cartridges for it, 3rd party, average less than $20 (I've bought two so far, and I think at least one was less than $15).

Be careful though with HP, because with some of their products, they like to shut your printer down for not using HP cartridges, or trying to use refilled HP cartridges. Whether other manufacturers are doing this, I don't know.

I, also, got tired of having to buy ink cartridges to replace empty but unused.

In April, 2017 I bought the HP LaserJet Pro M227fdw (it's a MFD). I had to download what, at the time, was the latest driver set from HP (I'm running LMDE2, sufficiently recent driver not in the repo) but once I figured it all it all out it's been working like a dream. Scanning, printing, copying (no land-line, so no faxing) just work.

Running 2 Brother wireless printers here: HL-5370DW mono laser since 2012--it's done marathon service on both windows and Linux. Drivers available on Brother website. Also running a multifunction Brother inkjet: MFC-4620DW. Print and scan/copy but we don't use the fax. (although tested and works fine under win and mint 17 and 18). Ink is cheap and printer is fast, though it is not a photo-quality color inkjet. I have it set up for my wife who uses it extensively, and it's pretty economical. The inkjet is no where near the build quality of the older laser, but more than adequate for home office use. I like buying Brother, and any other vendor who supports Linux the way they do. I was always an HP guy, but the newer printers, both laser and inkjet, are more expensive to maintain due to the cost of the consumables. Good luck with your search!

I have some scanning needs, and so lately I've been looking at some of the multi-function units available through Walmart and Target. What I really want is something that allows me to scan and save direct to a flash drive. I don't, strictly speaking, need any PC connectivity for what I have in mind. However, I'm kind of on the fence about whether what I'm looking at is decent, or actually capable of doing what I want.

I'd buy a flatbed scanner — in some ways I'd prefer that option — but there's two issues.

The first is there just aren't the choices in flatbed scanners that there used to be. The need has tapered off considerably.

The second is finding full and proper GNU+Linux support is a challenge because not every currently-available new unit is supported.

Don't know if it's just blatant scaremongering but there seems to be a lot of mixed messages and News articles in regards to Health Hazards of laser printers.
