Build your own Linux - one way to avoid systemd

Post by Faust »

I don't want to set off another heated debate about systemd itself ( and they all seem to get heated sooner or later ) ,
but this is always an option :-

http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

I checked for which distros do not have systemd , and there are far fewer than I thought .
I was going to list them here but I can't find a " spoiler " option for this forum ( a box that the reader can click on if interested , or ignore if not ).

They are listed here if anyone is interested :-

That sounds like a hell of a lot of effort to replace systemd, which BTW is the ONLY properly maintained option of any init program. Why else do you think it's taking over so fast???

Rather than reading all that why not just install Gentoo, in which systemd is optional? You do, however, have to compile and build Gentoo entirely from source. Updates work the same way. But at least they have good docs.

And, as ever with things like this, do it on a spare computer that you don't actually need.

Consider MXLinux. User-friendly but geeks are on their forums.

There is actually a side dedicated to this: http://without-systemd.org - it lists a lot of Distros without Systemd, most of them just recent forks. Maybe someone will build something like Ubuntu or Mint based on Devuan on day :)

I get a lot of work done on Refracta, which switched to devuan repositories. It's old-school debian, roughly equivalent to a Windows XP with the difficult bits installed and working. Add your own task-kde-desktop kde-full task-xfce-desktop openbox mate-panel if you like, after it's installed. It won't run Cinnamon or MATE (yet) they have a RedHat heritage that relies on systemd components.
