Fair question. I went with LTS.

As I say, I use my laptops in my business and under white HOT pressure. Minimizing change is important. But pleased that the KDE apps get updated. That means I get Kdenlive updates without PPA's!

Thanks, that's good to know. I went with Kubuntu 16.04 LTS (kubuntu-backports ppa enabled). My reasoning is a bit odd but here goes: I can ask support questions at https://askubuntu.com without my question being closed as off-topic; Neon would be OT there. The other one, https://unix.stackexchange.com, is very "serious" and I feel a bit intimidated there.

No. That's a stupid reason.

Go in the corner and face palm immediately.

More seriously… an option for us Mint KDE orphans for support could well be LinuxQuestions:

In fact, to keep focus I will make a separate post just after this for clarity.

Fair point. We're not all tech gurus here!

Re QUESTIONS & FORUMS:

Regarding support, I have had some support from LinuxQuestions in the past. The forums are here:

https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/

It's a very helpful forum and has all manner of useful sections. It is also distro neutral! So those who opt for Neon or Manjaro or Netrunner or whatever will have somewhere to query.

Only one word of, rather redundant warning… There are different subforums for the various distros and the level of feedback will depend on the distro you are using. If you are working with a 'user' distro such as *buntu, Mint or Neon then people will be polite and patient.

If, however, you choose to use a more 'DIY' distro or a more 'development' distro such as: Arch, Slackware, CentOS… the posters are going to be much more advanced in their knowledge and WILL EXPECT YOU TO BE THE SAME! I speak from experience as I tried to learn Linux using Slackware. Actually, I learned a lot and then went Mint. (But installing software was beyond painful!) So… if you go with one of those distros you are more likely to hit the 'RTFM!' crowd. But, that's understandable if you are working with a specialist distro. Distros like Slackware or Arch are not for the causal user. They require knowledge and work.

That should not impact any users here I would not have thought and LinuxQuestions is generally very helpful and the posters polite. I will be raising Neon questions there in the future.

Hope that helps.

At the end of the day the best way to decide which distro to choose is to actually install and test one in a new partition.
You don't even have to remove the existing partitions. That's actually the beauty of it, at least as I do in my system.
I'm not a fan of trying it out on virtual machines. It's obviously different. I'd rather try it out by booting on it and use it regularly as if it's my main OS.
And lastly, ask yourself what you really want for an OS. Mine is about being able to run my main graphics apps and other miscellaneous ones.
Then being able to browse the net safely and securely, etc.
I appreciate suggestions, but they have little influence in me. I'll probably pick Manjaro, but I've been comfortable with using Ubuntu-based ones.

Kubuntu forums have a lot of neon users. They seem to tolerate them.

That's true. Kubuntu Forums have different rules than Ask Ubuntu.

For all those inclined to sooner or later move on from Mint KDE to KDE Neon [or any other Ubuntu 16.04-based distro with KDE DE], AND if you are heavy uses of KWin functionality, you might wish to perform these tests ahead of time with your putative new distro, on your HW [not just in a VM], using Live Media. Though i really did like Maui, it was ultimately the chronic KWin unreliability of it, Neon, Mint, Kubuntu... which drove me to leave the DEB world & change to the RPM world. Here, KWin has been rock solid for me, on my HW. I could never return to Ubuntu-based KDE distros again, unless i knew this problem was gone. For anyone who, unlike me, does not use compositing, &/or does not rely heavily on KWin for efficient workflows, none of this will matter to you.

All these come from old posts of mine back in the Maui forum, in a topic i created. These links give you the core info, if you wish to replicate the tests yourself.

When i previously did my Live Media KWin stress-test via Desktop Grid window moves in Neon, i was using Plasma 5.7.5 as booted from "neon-useredition-20160915-1018-amd64.iso". Today i decided to retest, using the latest available ISO, "neon-useredition-20171116-1018-amd64.iso", which gives Plasma 5.11.3. What a turnaround! The old Neon & Plasma had failed the test miserably, but the current Neon & Plasma performed perfectly... i hammered it, but it gave ZERO KWin crashes during this test today. That is wonderful, & radically uplifts the candidature of Neon in my eyes...

...Except...

Despite Neon being now at Plasma 5.11.3, to my gobsmacked disbelief, RootActions ServiceMenu continues not to work. Even [as a possible workaround] installing kdesudo then [trying to] launch Dolphin with it from Konsole fails; “Executing Dolphin as root is not possible”. All this stuff works perfectly in TW.

FYI.

this has been discussed extensively in the kubuntu forums. KDE has taken the position, for various reasons, that dolphin should never be run as root. They view it as a security flaw, and you will note even kdesudo won't work, since no GUI application should be run as root.

You have two options. You can open dolphin as regular user open any file that needs editing, and when you try to save a root access file, you will automatically be asked for your password. This has been operational since KDE 5.8.

2nd option is to keep a simple file manager like xfe or double-cmd and run it as sudo.

Hi mr_raider
You have two options.
Au contraire, i have three options... #3 remain with oS TW/Leap. As i said, RASM works perfectly here.

Given that openSUSE works hand in glove with KDE , "your" explanation that it was a KDE policy decision does not quite smell right to me. Pls note: i am not in any way being negative to/at/about you, coz i have read what you said in other places too. However given that openSUSE are hardly fly-by-nighters, the fact that RootActions ServiceMenu continues to work great here in TW, seems to imply to me logically that the actual reason for it breaking in Ubuntu-based KDE spins might lie elsewhere.

I must say that broken* RASM in Neon is disappointing, as yesterday i was so pleased to discover the improvement in Neon's KWin Desktop Grid reliability that i was seriously willing to consider putting Neon on my Lappy [=secondary pc]. However functional RASM is non-negotiable for me.

* On the upside, it is only partly broken, i now realise. Earlier i had incorrectly extrapolated from the 2 root actions that are most critical for me, & which are broken ["Open as Text / Open with..." and "Open File Manager Here"], to then assume without testing [silly me] that all of RASM was broken. In fact, now that i have tested today, i see that still working RASM in Neon are: Open Terminal Here, Copy, Move/Rename, Delete, Ownership to..., and Change Permissions.

Furthermore, wrt those broken RASM actions, your "two options" workaround advice is excellent -- thank you.

It amuses me [in the context of another recently active thread in the Mint forum about whether distro hopping is a waste of time or not] that last year when i found that RASM was [partly?] broken in Mint 18 KDE, Kubuntu 16.04 & Neon, then after initially working fine in Maui it [partly?] stopped working [in 17.06 i think, but maybe it was 17.03], & it's also [partly?] broken in Fedora KDE 24 & 26 + KaOS, i might have simply concluded that it's now dead everywhere. For so many reasons i am glad that i do like testing multiple distros in VMs, coz otherwise i'd not have discovered how wonderful oS TW KDE is, for many reasons, but not least being its happily fully-functional RASM. However additionally, were it not for my lingering interest in keeping an eye on other distros "just because", i'd wrongly have still regarded Neon as being useless for me, instead of now seeing that its KWin DG bug is fixed, & its RASM is manageable.

Interim conclusion; Distro testing is good, forums browsing is good, Neon remains a viable candidate. :)

Many thanks. Well, i feel slightly baffled. Given that Martin Gräßlin is directly quoted, my earlier doubt is wrong. However what is not wrong, is my statement that RASM continues to be fully functional in oS TW KDE. Weird. Pls don't tell oS; i sure won't

Been okay with using Kubuntu, maybe because I have simple needs.
(So this is a "to each his own" thing and personal preferences varies. I'm not one to endorse anything.)
Only problem is with Kubuntu I can't connect to the internet when PIA VPN is off. (PIA is one of Mint's main donors.)
Which is not an issue with Mint. Anyone knows why I'm having this issue?

In case anyone else also has been affected by this, fyi i have now pinpointed the specific trigger for the KWin crashes when dragging windows between desktops in the Desktop Grid. This is relevant for multiple Ubuntu-16.04-based Plasma5 distros, definitely including Mint 18.x, Kubuntu, Neon, Maui... Avoiding this specific trigger effectively eliminates all these crashes.

I tried Maui. In Live USB session I couldn't install drivers for Wi-Fi. The same after system installation. At first driver manager had a long time to determine equipment and when it finally happens and I started installation, it goes up to 50% and aborted without any notification.

As for KDE Neon, I tried it after Maui. The same problem with drivers on Live USB. And when installation was close to the end it shows notification about error that happen with attempt to install bootloader.

Mint KDE, Ubuntu and Manjaro installations didn't had any of these problems.
Will try Kubuntu.
