Well, I'd hardly call that a tip. It's a rather involved procedure.

It also refers to the 2.4.2 kernel. That dates from 2001.

Since backwards compatibility in Linux doesn't work, I'd want a much newer source.

This creates needless confusion.

@lisabonne citadel: make sure that things you read on the web, are still relevant and current for today's Linux Mint. Otherwise you might lead other people (and yourself) into wrong directions.

OK.... No need to believe me on my word: this proves that the security bug you mentioned in the other thread, was fixed long ago in Ubuntu (within three weeks after it became known). And therefore also in Mint (which gets its kernels straight from Ubuntu):

fix is going to land in Ubuntu kernels in this SRU cycle,
with a likely release date of Aug 27. Earlier access to the kernels
with the fix will be available from the -proposed pocket, though they
come with the risk of being less tested.

The Ubuntu Security Team is usually a swift responder to important security bugs in the packages in the Main repo. So fixes are ordinarily being rolled out pretty quickly as SRU's (stable release updates). Which reach Mint automatically.

Again, backwards compatibility doesn't work in Linux. Neither does forwards compatibility.

If you are looking for config info on mint 18.x and you find something for 17.x you should check to see if it still works first. You shouldn't really use solutions for older releases otherwise.

So it's a pretty safe assumption that something from 2001 won't work.
