CrossOver on Chrome OS,

Postby Pierre » Wed Nov 08, 2017 6:49 am

The CrossOver on Chrome OS is now available:

Today is a very exciting day - we have released an open Beta of CrossOver on Chrome OS, which runs on the Android subsystem of Chrome OS and makes it possible to easily and cleanly run Windows applications on an Intel based Chromebook.

and
With the announcement of support of Android in Chrome OS, suddenly things made a lot more sense. A Chromebook has a big enough screen. And a keyboard and a mouse. And often, an Intel processor. What's more, it's really handy to have Quicken or Wizard 101 or your favorite Windows application right there.

so:
So grab your Chromebook, and grab CrossOver from the Play Store!

IE: it's ./wine for the ChromeOS

Absolutely
It's nearly SummerTime - - the Sausages are cooking & the Beer is Cold
- - we'll take on the World.

Anyway - - You're Right  It won't be Free . . .
but, the above mentioned Beta Release is the First Public Release,
- that was previously limited to a select group, that had previously registered their interest.
and True - - the Final Version, will most probably be a Commercial Release.

Crossover is nothing but another GUI front end for Wine.

Takiing a free open source program, writing a GUI for it, and then charging $$$ is absolutely routine in Windoze. In Linux it's something most users would call, um, deplorable.

If Wine was actually reliable there mnay be a case for it. But it isn't. Most Windows apps completely fail with Wine and any of its assorted GUIs. Including PlayOnLinux, which is free.

On the other hand ...

Developments in CrossOver are shared with WINE, so a contribution to CrossOver helps development of WINE.

At a current cost of $60 (USD) they are not asking for an arm and a leg.

Many years ago I paid for a version of CrossOver, then $40, it ran the few programmes written for Windows that I thought I could not do without as I made the transition from Windows to Linux.

To this day I test new versions of CrossOver and provide feedback to Codeweavers. That activity makes all updates free of charge.

... and it is so much easier to use than WINE :D
