Annoyed with FF yet?

Post by trapperjohn »

Ah progress... or is it?

Fire up wireshark and then start the latest Firefox. Chatty isn't it?

NoScript was the reason I have clung to FF for the past decade and, when it was at first not available in the new version, I figured if I had to settle for UMatrix and reloading tabs constantly that I shop around for a FF alternative. None of the mainstream stuff appeals to me because they all assume I want the hidden telemetry, helpers, and mindless exposure to virtually any content I might haplessly stumble into.

A possible solution: the Iridium browser. Give it a look if you're adventuresome: https://iridiumbrowser.de/

So far, I’m happy with it. At least it’s quiet.

Oh, and switch to duckduckgo.

I could be flamed for posting all this. Last time I steamed off online it was about the Unity desktop. Quite correctly, I was told I lived under a rock and that having a desktop that looked and felt like a phone was the future. I didn’t want to face the future and moved on.

Annoyed with FF yet?
Yep! But this is not a new determination. I consider FF as 'bloat-ware' squared

I know, at least for the old firefox, you could greatly reduce the chattiness by going to the privacy preferences (about:preferences#privacy in the url bar), and making sure that the "Block dangerous and deceptive content", "Block dangerous downloads", and "Warn you about unwanted and uncommon software" were all unticked. That way firefox doesn't compare data it sends you against lists provided by Google of risky software and links (or something like that).

(Personal note: I don't mind Mozilla analyzing some of my data --as long as I can opt-out-- so they can improve Firefox.)

You could, but it seems unlikely. And if you are, report and move on.

Their "talented team of designers and user researchers" all the time came up with new important idea where to place reload button. They can't decide yet where is right place for it. What privacy you all are talking about after that?

I was a bit upset with FF at first but I'm starting to like it. FAST.

I'm finding I quite like it. The interface was jarring for about 2 days but I'm already used to it. And page loading is much faster which is a good thing for sure.

simple fix. Open about:config and put telemetry into the Search box. Disable all you don't want.

I like FF57, too. It's fast, and seems to handle a few more open tabs without slowing down than previous versions did.

I took FF off hold this morning and let it upgrade to 57.

It's not all as bad as I thought it was going to be - the only thing I don't like so far is where the refresh thingy was moved to.

I keep going for the enter reader view thingy :?

Annoyed? No. FF-57 is hardly enough different for me to take notice of. Oh, I've noticed some of the things mentioned in this thread, but none are really annoying.

Hint:
You can move it back to almost its original position by clicking 'customize' and dragging the refresh button to the right of the location bar.

Thanks for that :D

I missed the customize option when I first looked at the selections

Now it's less as bad as I thought it was going to be
