Tar files in a Zip File

Post by Spearmint2 »

Had an odd thing happen today. I had some tar files and other files a guy needed.

I put them in a zip file and uploaded to my server. He said the download on his end failed.

I tried it in FF and it also failed for me.

So, I extracted the files, created a new zip file with them and uploaded it.

That also failed on download.

I'd had no problem creating and uploading the zip files.

Suspecting maybe the tar files didn't want to be in a zip file or there's some oddity in the transfer process of downloading,
I split ONLY the tar files out and put just those into a larger tar file and uploaded it to server. No problem then for him on the download for both the zip and tar file.

Is there some secret rule I can't find from googling, about NOT putting tar files into a zip file?

This was all done using Archive Manager.

Tar and zipping is a common practise.

I used Archive Manager to put them into a .zip file. Odd thing is the server on the download reported the zip file as about 5 MB smaller than the file was on my computer and on the server. At least I got the problem solved, but wish I knew why it happened.

May be the download was broken in between?

I uploaded it twice, then redid it and uploaded again. I tried a number of failed downloads, and it also failed for a couple others who tried. It just seems the tar files didn't like being in the .zip file formed by Archive Manager. The same tar files did OK when added into a single tar file.

Logically it's not right. But many times I leave reason behind when dealing with computers.

The Linux “tar” stands for tape archive, which is used by large number of Linux/Unix system administrators to deal with tape drives backup. The tar command used to rip a collection of files and directories into highly compressed archive file commonly called tarball or tar, gzip and bzip in Linux.

ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression. A .ZIP file may contain one or more files or directories that may have been compressed.

= both tar and zip are compressed files. You likely can't use both at the same time.

Seemingly can't, as you stated. I've put several zip files into a larger one, even password protected, and never had a problem, so was a bit surprised when it was tar files in a zip that failed.

???
I created a couple of tar files with file-roller, in a .zip file, also crew/file-roller, then extracted the .tar files then extracted the contents of the .tar files. No issues.

Code: Select all

file-roller 3.26.1
OP: try changing the extension on the .tar files -> .dat or .tar.dat, etc. see if anything works better. whoever downloads the .zip container will have to name them back.

Yes, but that was all done on your computer. That isn't a problem. It was when it was loaded to a server using the FTP capability of caja, and then the downloads using FF were corrupted. While it was local on my computer, absolutely no problem. So, it seems the problem happens only on download from Godaddy hosted account.
