And only 7982 years to go until the Y10K problem.

Re: 20 Years To Go: The Year 2038 Problem
And even if the 64-bit solution is implemented, the overall problem doesn't just disappear...
"At 15:30:08 UTC on Sunday, 4 December 292,277,026,596, 64-bit versions of the Unix time stamp would cease to work, as it will overflow the largest value that can be held in a signed 64-bit number. This is nearly 22 times the estimated current age of the universe, which is 1.37×10^10 years (13.7 billion)."

All computers should be running 64bit OS by 2038 = Problem Solved.

Perhaps even 128 bit will exist and we will all go beyond

I'm fairly certain there will be 32bit PC users running an ancient 32bit linux in 2038 and asking why dates no longer work.all41 wrote:Perhaps even 128 bit will exist and we will all go beyond

nah - - there will be some Die-hards, like myself, still running their First 8bit machine.catweazel wrote:I'm fairly certain there will be 32bit PC users running an ancient 32bit linux in 2038 and asking why dates no longer work.all41 wrote:Perhaps even 128 bit will exist and we will all go beyond

lol - it was Intel 4004 with 640 bytes of RAM. There are no 4bit OSes today, though there are some two-bit onesPierre wrote: (( is your's still stored in some cupboard, too ))

@ catweasel, .......
Since 2012 and Win 8, nearly all new computers come with UEFI technology which requires 64bit OS. But such computers have backward-compatibility for Legacy BIOS technology = can still install 32bit OS.
... Intel has just announced that they will end support for Legacy BIOS compatibility(= no more CSM in UEFI-BIOS settings) by 2020. ... https://fossbytes.com/intel-end-legacy- ... 2020-uefi/ . I think some new Intel-based computers today have already removed Legacy BIOS compatibility support.
... So, by 2038, 99.9% of computers will be running at least 64bit OS.
Yes, agree. Then(= in 2038) we should refer the 32bit PC users to this thread.catweazel wrote:I'm fairly certain there will be 32bit PC users running an ancient 32bit linux in 2038 and asking why dates no longer work.all41 wrote:Perhaps even 128 bit will exist and we will all go beyond

With a bit of luck - Yes!
However, there is the question of who needs more luck: me or the machine?

I learned at a very early age, 11, that I was good at latin. The teacher wrote "Cogitus ergo sum" on the blackboard. I got caned on the hands six times... after having rubbed out the g in cogitusabsque fenestris wrote: ⤴Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:24 amBonum vinum - hilari sunt cogitationes. At the age of 11 you knew what that word means..?I learned at a very early age, 11, that I was good at latin. The teacher wrote "Cogitus ergo sum" on the blackboard. I got caned on the hands six times... after having rubbed out the g in cogitus
So - in this innocent age, no, not me! However, I was very interested in those 24-book encyclopaedias. Prefers the book with letter S.
