Mint Beta testers for the new inxi Perl release requested

Hi Mint users, I'm the developer of inxi, and since you use inxi a fair amount, you should probably test the new Perl based inxi version before it's released as next inxi, to find bugs/issues etc before beta testing ends. Barring new issues or bugs, I expect to release this as next inxi early this week.

I'm working on the new 3.0.0 release of inxi. The development branch is called pinxi, so you can run pinxi and inxi together to compare etc. Once all the bugs and issues that are going to be found are found, the pinxi branch will move to inxi master and become inxi 3.0.0. Pinxi is a full rewrite, in Perl5, of inxi.

To test, install/download, as root/sudo:

Once installed, updating works the same as with inxi:

I want to release version 3.0.0 of inxi with no real bugs, at least as few as possible, and as many improvements over inxi 2.3.56 as possible.

I"m probably now in my final days of beta testing (unless new bugs show up), but I'd like if other distros would give it a spin and see if there are any errors, bugs, issues, glitches, etc.

Once there are no active issues or bugs, pinxi will move to inxi 2.9.01, as the first official Perl inxi release. After a few weeks, this will become inxi 3.0.0, again assuming, all bugs fixed etc.

Of particular interest to me is ARM testing, zfs or mdraid software RAID, and weird old systems, or weird new systems, that might expose unfound bugs.

All short form args for normal options are the same, only now there are also long form args for everything as well, which means any tools that use inxi should see few changes, though you want to check that to make sure. See --help for new options.

There's an enhanced debugger as well, called with --debug 21 (leaves tar.gz data file on your system) or --debug 22 (removes all debugging data after automatic upload), which is helping a lot with debugging issues.

The most useful testing command is: pinxi -zv8

-zv8 is basically everything it can do, so any bugs will show there if they exist, plus the -z output filter.

This shows me a lot of subtle errors that most users don't realize are errors. I'm fixing a host of such errors right now, most of them at this point are actually new features and enhancements, like the recently added usb audio and network device true driver ID, not just the static values inxi used, and pinxi up until last night.

There's some ARM issues I'm working on, and some usb network issues as well. Software RAID zfs or mdraid examples are welcome because those were fairly difficult to get debugged and working.

Thanks for looking, and it is probably a good idea to verify that bugs are fixed before it's released since Mint does use this tool a lot.

First, thank you for your work on this project!

One thing I think you should be aware of. In Linux Mint, the current version of inxi is 2.2.35, so we may not be aware of improvements/differences from your pre-Perl release of 2.3.56.

That said, the only oddity I've noticed is in the graphics section that I don't even know if it matters. Here's the differences:

From inxi:
GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 12.0.6 Direct Rendering: Yes

From pinxi:
version: 4.1 Mesa 12.0.6 compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Thank you very much for this excellent software which I use frequently, as do most people in this forum. Thank you for providing this new version as "pinxi" so that we can keep the previous version while testing the new version. I like that USB section as well. :)

Question - request: Is there a GUI for this? Is there an option for displaying the current local IP Address and the public IP address, and perhaps the current DNS servers? If not, please consider this a feature request.

One thing I just noticed, it appears inxi uses gigabytes while pinxi uses gibibytes, but both use GB. I can envision some complaints from this. ("Hey, yer stoopid app stole suma my hard drives spaces!") :lol:

Re running current inxi to compare, as part of the preparation for the new inxi Perl release, I've created an inxi legacy branch, and that inxi has been renamed to binxi (bash inxi, get it?), so, as with pinxi, you can run binxi pinxi and inxi all together. Each uses its own config directory, and makes its own debuggers and logs, they have no connection at all. So if you want to run current last release of bash inxi, binxi, this is how you do it. I can't say a word about 2.2.35, because I truly have no idea or memory of what it doesn't have, and certainly impossible to say what bugs were fixed between that very very old release and current 2.3.56 inxi. The only thing I know is that 2.2 did not have -B battery option, I think that's the new one added. Mint might as an aside consider packaging current inxi for its users, since there is exactly zero benefit to using old inxis, they will just be missing data, missing ids, missing new stuff. Packaging inxi is trivial, you can literally grab the package from unit193's repo, he's the ubuntu / debian packager, and the package will always work, the dependencies never change in any way that would impact an operating system < 10 years old.

MrEen, what you'll actually discover is that many hard drives report their sizes in bits, not bytes, and this creates a wrong max size claim. One early decision I made in inxi was to take all units in kB internally, so all units for partitions, disks, memory, are kB internally, so math works always.

For the output stage, the units are converted back to the nearest relevant units, following the technically correct, I believe, specs, so:

1024 KB = 1 MB
1024 MB = 1 GB
1024 GB = 1 TB
1024 TB = 1 PB
1024 PB = 1 EB

that's the math pinxi uses internally. This fixes many unfixable issues in inxi, which did not do this, or did it wrong in many cases.

As you'll notice, the math is very easy, since say, 1 TB = 1024^3 KB

So basically I think what you'll be seeing is people who believed they had size x finding that they actually have a smaller size x, because the given size was a function of 1000^x, not 1024^x. This is a long standing trick disk makers have used to make their disks appear to be larger than they actually are, so I believe pinxi may serve to be somewhat educational in this regard.

This could be in error in the case where units I believe are in kB are actually not in bytes, but in 1000 bits. But I explicitly get all partition sizes in kB, that's a change from inxi. And I believe memory sizes internally also default to kB, though it could be that this is not the case, in which case I might have to correct some internal conversions, but as far as I know, and I spent a fair amount of time on this problem, everything re sizes internally really is in kB, and the conversions are correct.

phd21, whether there is a gui or not has nothing to do with me, I don't do gui software, never had any interest, never will.

However, I can tell you, for makers of gui software, that just got a whole lot easier, because as of a few days ago, pinxi now exports to json, which was a feature I'd built support in for from the very beginning, though I hadn't made the actual json/xml output handlers. Those are now done, though the xml is ugly, but I'm not likely to spend time on xml unless someone has a strong interest or reason to use it over json. Because hash values in the output are not sorted, though the order of rows is, of course the json data has to be processed by programming to create the desired output. But this has nothing to do with my end, I completed the long standing issue request to have json output by having it work, what people chose to do with that output is up to them, it's free as in freedom but also as in what you want to do with it software.

I would however strongly urge anyone considering such things to talk to me, because currently I have no obligation at all to maintain anything in any condition or state because pinxi/inxi is for output primarily, so if someone were to rely on some output structure for their programming, they'd be very unwise to fail to contact me directly on github and let me know.

As for gui wrappers, I know antix makes one, but I don't have anything to do with that. The core short form options did not change, so nobody who made a gui wrapper should experience much change unless pinxi gets confused about what started it, but that's an issue any gui developer who notes it would have to communicate directly with me about, and not assume might magically 'get fixed'.

I think this answers the questions I noticed so far, I'll look at the output later, I'm trying to resolve a few hard to correct issues, basically new features/enhancements to inxi but not easy to do. I'll check the outputs for errors or glitches and fix those if the cause is obvious, if not, I might need some data from that system.

MrEen, re glx, that's very easy, the old inxi is wrong, and pinxi is right. There's a whole lot of such corrections and adjustments in pinxi, some very subtle, others less so, but except for bugs at this point, almost all the data shows is much more reliable and accurate than inxi, though there are still specific bug cases active where the output is wrong. I'm working on one such case now for ARM. But overall, for most systems, everything pinxi reports is more precise, more accurate, and better formatted and structured than inxi (otherwise what would be the point of taking on such a huge project of rewriting that much logic?).

However, to really compare apples to apples, you'd want to ignore the 2.2.35 stuff, which is so out of date that it' can't even be considered as valid data anymore technically, and compare pinxi output to binxi output, which would have all the fixes and updates inxi had to current.

I'm pretty sure Mint gets inxi via Ubuntu. As Mint 18.x is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, that explains the old version. Mint 19 is coming in a few months and will be based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and I just checked and it appears they'll have inxi 2.3.56-1 so at least we'll be in the very recent past version wise at that time.

I'm suggesting that rather than get the version from the stable repos, you get it directly from the packager, he's usually up on the latest versions. It's a tiny package, trivial to update in your repos, and would help your users. I've always wondered why Mint didn't do this given how much they use this tool, it's really not a difficult thing to do, you're taking minutes at most per new release.

It doesn't need a GUI. It works just fine the way it is.

jimallyn, oh, I agree, I never saw the point of a gui that sends the normal commands to inxi when you can just run pinxi/inxi directly. But some distros have used them, I guess they like it, to click a button that gives you -bxxx or something, whatever. Might ever so slightly lower the learning curve for new users, don't know. To me, that seemed like lowering it too far.
