all41, your missing xorg driver loaded I don't believe is a pinxi issue, that probably can be found in xorg.0.log.
Easy to test: run: grep -E 'Loading|Unload|Failed' /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and post the output, that will show. If in doubt, paste your entire Xorg.0.log file and I can verify it.
Partition labels starting with escaped / are now converted, that's the
\x2fhome
those will now show the expected /home. Never seen a / used in a label, but that's what I'm looking for in beta testing, stuff I've never myself seen.

the tun0 device I suspect was an non identified usb device, maybe this one?: Device-6: Northstar Systems bus ID: 7:2 usb: 2.00
When those vendor specific classes and no network key words are used, there's no way for pinxi to know it's a networking device. I'm going to look into improving that, but that's the current state.
gnome-terminal- is a bug, notice the trailing -? I don't know how to fix that one, I've seen it before

In a VirtualBox VM, with Xubuntu 18.04 Bionic:
I notice that the RAM report asks for root permissions (for dmidecode). This doesn't seem desirable? It seems to me, that pinxi should provide full hardware information without any root permissions....

inxi -zv7 also asks / asked root permissions for dmidecode... (there is no --verbosity level 8 for inxi...) (query [p]inxi -m)...

FYI: I was recently going over my Linux Mint KDE v18.2 (Ubuntu 16.04) and v17.3 (ubuntu 14.04) setup and using instructions for speeding up Linux Mint from member Pjotr's wonderful Linux website. One of its instructions I just tried recently was to remove the "xserver-xorg-video-intel" driver as it could be slowing down my already ancient under-powered computer. I wonder if that is what is causing the "missing xorg driver" in the results of "pinxi"? Honestly, I cannot tell a difference with this driver loaded or unloaded. Here is output from an antique with observable personality disorders. I have included output from sudo pinxi -zv8 and sudo inxi -zv7 for comparison.
inxi version = 2.3.21-00 (2017-06-13)
The biggest discrepancy I see is the Memory line - the maximum memory capacity for the MSI-7185 (K8N SLI-F) motherboard is 4GB. The mobo has four slots and maybe a 4GB compatible DDR modules would work ... if such a creature exists. I think PC3200 modules maxed out at 1GB.

I also see a couple of differences between pinxi -zv8 and inxi -zv7. First, inxi shows some Battery information for my wireless keyboard/mouse but pinxi does not. I do not recall inxi reporting battery information in the past, and I suspect it ‘just showed up’ with the latest update. Weirdly, pinxi -B reports “No battery data found. Is one present?”

I suspect this is yet another idiosyncracy of this motherboard, but the CPU Core Speed output is all over the place. This has always been true for inxi, and pinxi shows the same behavior. I ran inxi -C three times, one right after another, and I got different results.

thx-1138, all tools that require root have to be run as root. Users have to do specific manual configurations to have sudo permissions applied to specific application names without a password, inxi/pinxi offer that for hddtemp and file, which both also require root to run. It's just a fact that some data on your system requires root to get, that's simply how it is. /sys has opened up this a LOT, so of course, whenever the data is in /sys and I can have inxi/pinxi find it, that's always my first choice.

phd21, your example with all41's are both helpful since they are different systems, but showing the same behavior. I'm leaning towards this being an actual xorg bug, since clearly it should not be unloading a module that is already loaded, which then shows the failed message because it's already loaded. this was the missing bit of information I needed. I am not sure, but I do believe this is an actual xorg bug, and it's possible that because most people do not parse xorg log itself for data, it's gone unnoticed. Or it could be a behavior that is intended, but logically it does not make any sense.
I think I'll see if there is a more reliable way to get this data, but I never found any so far. However, pinxi now reports quite accurately the actual drivers being used per card, so the data will be there in some form, but this odd xorg logging behavior will probably require more research on my end, and maybe some inquiries directly to xorg itself.
I'll let you know when I have the usb id fixes done, but there are some cases where even when I use the enhanced usb data from lsusb -v, there simply are no identifiable terms to locate a usb networking device, which then trips the unhandled IF line starter: IF-ID-..: which I made different from the normal IF: starter specifically so I could readily identify when this failure has happened.

BenTrabetere, re max module size, in the world of total and utter garbage data, when it comes to overall champion, there are few contenders to the vendor generated values inserted into the system dmi tables, and which have NOTHING to do with the actual hardware itself, literally nothing, of memory array max capacity and max module size. Basically what pinxi does is look for logical contradictions, or a lack of that data in the first place, in either field. Once it finds empty or logically incoherent data there, it will correct the output. For example, say a syatem reports max module size of 2 gb but pinxi has found a module of 4 gb, it now knows the max module size is garbage data, because of the empirical fact that a larger module exists. Likewise, say a system reports that its capacity is 8 gB yet it has 16 gb installed. Again, pinxi will take reality over the vendor generated gibberish, I just added in a refinement as well, which is, if pinxi has either gotten or generated a max capacity number, it will further try to show the potential max capacity per slot, by dividing the max capacity by the slot count. whenever pinxi has modified reported data, it adds: note: est [or check] after the capacity number.
In your case, since you don't see the note: est after either item, this is what some lowly paid drone at MICRO-STAR pasted into those dmi fields. And for all we know, it's actually right. I always look up the board specs on a site lke http://crucial.com/ or on the original product page specs to verify this information since I know from doing inxi for years that this is garbage data.
The per slot data, on the other hand, is totally accurate, and comes from the installed memory itself, which is why pinxi always trusts that math over the junk capacity data. So if you for example see a 4gB stick in there, that's a supported capacity. Sometimes an array will have, say, a capacity of 8 gb,a max stick size of 4 gb, and 4 slots, a situation where pinxi might guess the capacity was 16 gb if there was 1 4gb stick, but it would tell you it was an est/check situation.

that line is most of concern to me. Clearly there is a device since there is IF interface data. I don't see anything that could be a networking device in your --usb report, so what is the actual card there? That's a total failure to get the card data. I'd want to see the debugger data report generated with --debug 21 (or 22 if you want the generated gz data file deleted).
Either lspci -vnn is using a different term for networking or something totally new is happening.
If you can paste lspci -vnn at least if you don't want to generate the full --debug data upload that might be enough to figure out what happened there.
There's also a glitch in the 'started in: ' item in Info line, that's a clear failure. Overall I'd like to see a --debug dataset from this system because there's a lot of options it could be re what is happening there.
Re inxi, battery data, it did not 'just show up in a recent update', that was a few years ago, and the problem, as I've alluded to, is that Mint won't update their inxi version even though that would require literally only minutes, and once automated, less, for every mint release out there. I can't remember when 2.3.00 was released, but it was a long time ago, 56 real releases were made since then, 2.3 introduced battery data.
So this is another case where pinxi is right, and inxi is wrong.
By the way, sudo isn't needed for most things in pinxi, just ram, slots, and some sub data like hddtemp, unmounted file system type.
Thanks for the feedback, some of these issues will require a normal --debug 21 [or 22 if you prefer to clean the system of the data gz] to really get to the bottom of.

The formula is quite simple, pinxi reports everything it can at user level. I certainly agree that it would be nice to have ram info available, but it isn't. If things were nice and orderly in the *nix system, pinxi would only be about 6 thousand lines long, literally.. But the sad fact is, things are messy. But overall inxi/pinxi does a pretty good job getting all the info it can as user, not root, so when you see that root message, you can be certain it is not possible to get that data in any other way.I notice that the RAM report asks for root permissions (for dmidecode). This doesn't seem desirable? It seems to me, that pinxi should provide full hardware information without any root permissions....
I notice that the Machine Device got the id wrong, it says Oracle and it shouldn't. That's a small bug due to unexpected data.
Can you show the output of this command: systemd-detect-virt
It looks like that tool might be reporting virtualbox wrong.

thx-1138, all tools that require root have to be run as root. Users have to do specific manual configurations to have sudo permissions applied to specific application names without a password, inxi/pinxi offer that for hddtemp and file, which both also require root to run. It's just a fact that some data on your system requires root to get, that's simply how it is. /sys has opened up this a LOT, so of course, whenever the data is in /sys and I can have inxi/pinxi find it, that's always my first choice.

phd21, your example with all41's are both helpful since they are different systems, but showing the same behavior. I'm leaning towards this being an actual xorg bug, since clearly it should not be unloading a module that is already loaded, which then shows the failed message because it's already loaded. this was the missing bit of information I needed. I am not sure, but I do believe this is an actual xorg bug, and it's possible that because most people do not parse xorg log itself for data, it's gone unnoticed. Or it could be a behavior that is intended, but logically it does not make any sense.
I think I'll see if there is a more reliable way to get this data, but I never found any so far. However, pinxi now reports quite accurately the actual drivers being used per card, so the data will be there in some form, but this odd xorg logging behavior will probably require more research on my end, and maybe some inquiries directly to xorg itself.
I'll let you know when I have the usb id fixes done, but there are some cases where even when I use the enhanced usb data from lsusb -v, there simply are no identifiable terms to locate a usb networking device, which then trips the unhandled IF line starter: IF-ID-..: which I made different from the normal IF: starter specifically so I could readily identify when this failure has happened.

BenTrabetere, re max module size, in the world of total and utter garbage data, when it comes to overall champion, there are few contenders to the vendor generated values inserted into the system dmi tables, and which have NOTHING to do with the actual hardware itself, literally nothing, of memory array max capacity and max module size. Basically what pinxi does is look for logical contradictions, or a lack of that data in the first place, in either field. Once it finds empty or logically incoherent data there, it will correct the output. For example, say a syatem reports max module size of 2 gb but pinxi has found a module of 4 gb, it now knows the max module size is garbage data, because of the empirical fact that a larger module exists. Likewise, say a system reports that its capacity is 8 gB yet it has 16 gb installed. Again, pinxi will take reality over the vendor generated gibberish, I just added in a refinement as well, which is, if pinxi has either gotten or generated a max capacity number, it will further try to show the potential max capacity per slot, by dividing the max capacity by the slot count. whenever pinxi has modified reported data, it adds: note: est [or check] after the capacity number.
In your case, since you don't see the note: est after either item, this is what some lowly paid drone at MICRO-STAR pasted into those dmi fields. And for all we know, it's actually right. I always look up the board specs on a site lke http://crucial.com/ or on the original product page specs to verify this information since I know from doing inxi for years that this is garbage data.
The per slot data, on the other hand, is totally accurate, and comes from the installed memory itself, which is why pinxi always trusts that math over the junk capacity data. So if you for example see a 4gB stick in there, that's a supported capacity. Sometimes an array will have, say, a capacity of 8 gb,a max stick size of 4 gb, and 4 slots, a situation where pinxi might guess the capacity was 16 gb if there was 1 4gb stick, but it would tell you it was an est/check situation.
Network: Message: No PCI card data found.
that line is most of concern to me. Clearly there is a device since there is IF interface data. I don't see anything that could be a networking device in your --usb report, so what is the actual card there? That's a total failure to get the card data. I'd want to see the debugger data report generated with --debug 21 (or 22 if you want the generated gz data file deleted).
Either lspci -vnn is using a different term for networking or something totally new is happening.
If you can paste lspci -vnn at least if you don't want to generate the full --debug data upload that might be enough to figure out what happened there.
There's also a glitch in the 'started in: ' item in Info line, that's a clear failure. Overall I'd like to see a --debug dataset from this system because there's a lot of options it could be re what is happening there.
that was a bug that was too hard to fix in inxi. It's fixed in pinxi.inxi shows some Battery information for my wireless keyboard
Re inxi, battery data, it did not 'just show up in a recent update', that was a few years ago, and the problem, as I've alluded to, is that Mint won't update their inxi version even though that would require literally only minutes, and once automated, less, for every mint release out there. I can't remember when 2.3.00 was released, but it was a long time ago, 56 real releases were made since then, 2.3 introduced battery data.
No weirdness, inxi was wrong, pinxi is right, there is no battery data. It only shows battery output when the -B option, or the -v options that trip -B, are used. For -F/b, for example, battery data only shows if it's there, to avoid cluttering up the output with pointless data.Weirdly, pinxi -B reports “No battery data found. Is one present?”
So this is another case where pinxi is right, and inxi is wrong.
By the way, sudo isn't needed for most things in pinxi, just ram, slots, and some sub data like hddtemp, unmounted file system type.
pinxi is reporting the speed at the moment it hits the cpu output. To give the system a chance to reflect the actual cpu load, pinxi 'sleeps' 0.35 seconds by default right before it reads the cpu speeds. Sometimes the system 'spins down' to the state it would be in if pinxi was not running, sometimes it doesn't, but it does try. cpus run per core speeds, so there's nothing weird or unusual there, that's how your cpu works, and that's what pinxi is telling you. pinxi tries to hit all the speed data right before it starts the heavy lifting of cpu data interpretation, and it usually works ok. The new --sleep option lets you tweak this, from 0 to anything. Usually will make little difference though, modern cpus are good at adjusting themselves very rapidly to changing loads. The --sleep 0 option might result in overall higher reported cpu speeds, at least in the core or cores that are running pinxi ( believe though I'm not certain that pinxi runs on one cpu thread, though subshells it generates could well be running on another core or thread.CPU Core Speed output is all over the place.
Thanks for the feedback, some of these issues will require a normal --debug 21 [or 22 if you prefer to clean the system of the data gz] to really get to the bottom of.

I'm particularly pleased to see the new estimate tool for max ram module size is working well.
This is an example of what I was explaining above. I don't know if the system reported a false max module size, or didn't get one. Whatever the case, pinxi generated it, correctly, based on the fact a 4GB module is actually there, so it's clearly the max size. Because it generated this dynamically, it adds the note: est item to let you know this was created by pinxi.
I don't see any errors there, which is good. I'm glad to see the cinnamon detection working well, those are slightly tricky.

pinxi will replace inxi as version 2.9.01 tomorrow barring any last minute bugs.
I really liked the pinxi branch, so I'm keeping that active for all future perl inxi dev work, that worked out super well.

I am almost positive it is an onboard Marvell PHY 88E1111 Gigabit Ethernet chip.
Done. Three times, because I am an idiot with too many open terminals.That's a total failure to get the card data. I'd want to see the debugger data report generated with --debug 21 (or 22 if you want the generated gz data file deleted).
Either lspci -vnn is using a different term for networking or something totally new is happening.
If you can paste lspci -vnn at least if you don't want to generate the full --debug data upload that might be enough to figure out what happened there.

thanks for the data, I'll check it out. But your lspci shows no networking device, sometimes firewire was used for some forms of networking but you'd know if that was the case.
I've never seen a nic not show up on the pcibus, but that's how it goes... I've used marvell nics before, onboard, but they showed as part of the pci bus data along with everything else. ARM devices of course don't have pci data, so they never show that stuff, but I've never seen that on a desktop regular intel/amd type. I've seen some SOC type devices, amd, that had no pci devices except nics.
If anyone has a USB networking device, can you update to latest pinxi, then show: pinxi -zixxx
I'm trying to confirm a fix I tried is working.

I really like that update feature for "pinxi", only I have to run it as sudo (root user) for it to work properly and update system folders which is just fine.
I noticed that running "pinxi -ixxx" shows me the local network IP address and the wan public IP address, and it changes properly when I connect to a VPN, nice. I did not know that inxi or pinxi could do that. Is there a option flag for getting the DNS servers too? Is there a comprehensive manual for "pinxi" yet, or will that be "man pinxi", or the GitHub Wiki or both?
FYI: I mentioned before that I removed the "xserver-xorg-video-intel" driver based upon a recommendation for older Intel Graphics cards like mine. I had to re-install that because in my Linux Mint KDE systems it seems that an "xorg" video driver must be there (required) by various programs and applications to run or run properly.
Would it help to re-run and post the results of "pinxi -zv8" with the "xserver-xorg-video-intel" driver installed now?

Can you add the information, if the current version of Mint (as we are here in the Mint forum) is a fresh install or an upgrade?
In some cases this information can be crucial and specially the changes in the Mint 18.x series, which only partially get applied, if the system has been upgraded, makes this desirable.
The ideal case would be, if inxi could tell, which version had originally been installed, but I fear, this is likely impossible to find out. But even the information, when the system had been installed at first (discovered by the age of some system files), would be of some help. So if inxi says, that a given system runs Mint 18.3, but we can see also, that the system does exist at least for, lets say, 5 months, than we know, that the system had been installed with a previous version.

To further phd21's point on pinxi -ixx and tun0, the command shows my tun0 speed as 10 Mbps
while I was running speedtest through the tunnel with resultant speeds of:A speed of 10 Mbps as reported by pinxi -ixx doesn't look right, my ISP supplies 150/10 Mbps down/up.

Regarding updating--
sudo inxi -U
has always been the case.
Everything in life was difficult before it became easy.
