Is there a Cinnamon desktop for Raspberry pi 3 b+ ?

Post by richlion2 » Wed Apr 11, 2018 1:36 pm

Hello,

is there a Cinnamon desktop I could install on my Raspberry PI 3 B+ ?

I found this link, but not sure what is means:
https://packages.debian.org/stretch/cinnamon

Is it possible to install Cinnamon using apt-get?

Thanks
Richard

Whether that link is right depends on which Debian version you're running. If it's Jessie (the latest one) it'd be this one:

https://packages.debian.org/jessie/cinnamon

If you're running Debian you should be able to install it.

But should you? I don't have Cinnamon installed anymore (not my taste) but if I were to use it, it'd be on a fairly powerful modern computer. One with a good video card, preferably Nvidia, with at least 1Gb dedicated video RAM.

In other words, Cinnamon is a resource hog ... it uses as much RAM as Windows 7, 8 et al ... and I'm not so sure a Raspberry Pi is the right place for it.

It can be done, apparently by adding Debian's ARM repositories. However, somebody who did it posted this remark, which is about what I expected:
I have Cinnamon running on Raspbian and to be honest the Pi 3 really can't handle it. Even a base install with just core components is basically un-usable.
