All the software you listed is available on Ubuntu 18.04 from either the Universe or Multiverse repositories, aside from pulseeffects (but it's on no Ubuntu version, you need a PPA for it). These repositories are not enabled by default on Ubuntu and as you didn't enable them, yes the software in them would not be available for installation.

Ubuntu has four main repository:

• Main - Canonical-supported free and open-source software.
• Universe - Community-maintained free and open-source software.
• Restricted - Proprietary drivers for devices.
• Multiverse - Software restricted by copyright or legal issues.

By default only Main and Restricted are enabled on the ISO and on new installations. The packages synaptic, openshot, cairo-dock and hdapsd come from the Universe repository and Steam obviously comes from the Multiverse repository. You can enable the Universe and Multiverse repositories through Ubuntu Software Center menu option for configuring repositories.

CSS is another bug of mine in Linux.
A 2,000 line CSS which cascades into another 2,000 line file that refers to another 2,000...

I used to see all kinds of programs for Linux but now fewer & fewer...
And that trend of Linux Programs turning into Windows Apps...

I see Linux becoming Windows 10, a complicated bloated pile of OS CRAP!

I was happy with Windows XP because places I worked used WinXP.
It was the best of the Microsoft OS's.
Then I retired, then the WinXP laptop quit...
Now living in Linux and was loving it...

I am old school!
I grew up on DOS & Win3.1. Hated Win95&98. Then XP, ahhh...
I learned the old programming languages in HS & College.
Basic (on a teletype with paper tape!), Fortran, Cobol, Pascal & Modula, C, & Assembly.
I know of C++ but tend to stick with C.
I use Visual Basic for Excel and it still baffles.

I know I will get ranted at by Linux Lovers but I don't care.
I have pretty much turned off Linux Updates and am sticking with what works.
If I can't find a program I will write my own.

What's interesting for me in this thread is that linux mint is more popular than Ubuntu, on which it is based, and originally I thought this is because of some aspects relating to ubuntu philosophy (ie not including non-free codecs by default) but it is apparent that much of it is due to things like unity and default packages and use of LTS version. And whilst it seems Ubuntu and Mint seem to provide choice, if Ubuntu makes increasingly unpopular choices and loses 'market share', will mint eventually seek to break away or will it just have to work increasingly hard to adjust the distro to deal with unpopular decisions within Ubuntu?

As an example, we just got back home a couple days ago from being out for a week. 16 of 22 updates currently available are Security updates.

The Ubuntu Security Notices site can give a flavour of the frequency of actual security updates - i.e. package updates that fix / mitigate a known CVE...

I was a Mint user from when they first provided a functional Mate desktop. I then used LMDE in the early days. But no Mint since May of last year.

Never heard that term before! Took me a while to figure out what it meant .. was still half asleep.

It's good that you still participate in these Forums; one of the major benefits of Mint but I'd still come here even if I had Mint only on "secondary" machines or in VMs.
