Killed off. The Mint devs want to concentrate on Gnome-based DEs.Herr Kantarell wrote: ⤴Fri Apr 27, 2018 2:47 am Is KDE that unpopular or was the mint flavor killed off?

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
My exposure to KDE was thru several distros under Virtualbox.
I was disenchanted at the lack of a full set of tools.
If you wanted something, you had to add it in.
I can understand that the geeks want it nice and tight, no fluffware, etc...
but it turned me off.... I am a full GUI guy who wants the tools to be loaded and ready to go.
that of course more than doubles the installed overhead....
I just now, did a fresh backup to Aptik on a new USB HDD, and Cinnamon required 62.5 gB of space for the things I have installed. that is almost 3 times the room required for KDE.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
I've seen that some of the official flavours - Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mate, Budgie are only offering 3 years LTS support vs the main editions 5yrs. Is that a new thing? Personally I think that would be a good thing for Mint. Once 19 is out there will be 35 supported versions of Mint (excluding LMDE) until 17.x hits EOL. That's crazy

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
No, that has always been like that with most or even all official derivatives. Note that the three-year-limit only applies to their particular desktop environments; what they share with Ubuntu, gets the full five years.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
KDE will still be do able on Mint 19 , you'll just have to do the leg work yourself. and It won't get dev support. Kubuntu is the best alternative if you want out of the box configuration and Neon is second. that's just my opinion. There are other fine KDE centric distros available also. this was announced by Clem last October so shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3418
and yes three year LTS support has been standard among most of the various desktop versions for some time, started with xfce version and spread.
In any event looking forward to the new Mnt 19.

Kubuntu 14.04 is LTS for five years according to https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14-04-lts/
Kubuntu 12.04 was also LTS for five years: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/PrecisePangoli ... es/Kubuntu

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Yeah - it looks like Kubuntu followed Xubuntu's lead with 16.04 onwards and went 3 years for 16.04 and now 18.04. I've just been looking back at Xubuntu releases and they have been 3 years for LTS all the way through.aes2011 wrote: ⤴Fri Apr 27, 2018 5:47 am Kubuntu 14.04 is LTS for five years according to https://kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14-04-lts/

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
151tom, I agree! Ubuntu 18.04 is an excellent release! Wayland works great with Gnome, at least with both my AMD graphics in my laptop and desktop, snaps are interesting, and Gnome 2.28.1 is pretty darn nice. The ability to upgrade the kernel without rebooting is awesome too. Lots of good things in 18.04. The developers did a great job!
Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Tried out Kubuntu 18.04 yesterday and it is quite nice. I wish they had not dropped from 5 years to 3 years support though, that leaves only main Ubuntu with 5 years support. Mint 19 will have 5 years full support on all 3 versions: Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce, right?
Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
I think that's probably right, at least if you prefer Debian based distros, and I couldn't live without Synaptic.
No rush anyway. You know how WIndows users with a modicum of sense would wait until the first Service Pack? Linux is the same. Sensible Ubuntu users, unless they have a hardware support issue solved in 18.04, will be waiting for 18.04.1.

Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Isn't Muon very similar to Synaptic?
Re: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
yes, Moun is similar to Synaptic. But I personally still prefer synaptic. You can install synaptic in KDE a not problem.
