I'd rather fight with ARCH than take on Scratch. :P

If I wanted to build Linux from scratch I'd use Gentoo. It's very good ... ANdroid and many embedded systems are based on it ... and it has very good support. But I wouldn't expect beginner hands to be held that much with any of these.
