KDE less of a resource hog than Cinnamon

Post by catweazel »

Do you believe that KDE is a resource hog? Apparently a lot of work has gone into Plasma to reduce it's footprint. Here are two screen dumps, one of KDE Plasma 5.13.1 and one of Cinnamon from the Mint 19 beta. Both shots were taken after about 10 minutes of idle time:

Indeed, they've put a lot of work in on KDE and it's a lot lighter on the CPU. I really don't understand why Mint/Cinnamon uses quite so much CPU at idle and it seems to have gotten worse with Mint 19.

Gnome's historically been a resource hog and I think Cinnamon has unfortunately inherited that.

Yeah, Cinnamon is very bad in that respect, it's why I'm not using it, but MATE is fine when idle and that one is more GNOME than Cinnamon. I don't know what Cinnamon does to burn the CPU cycles when it should be idle.

Neither do I. It seems to be "cinnamon --replace" and the standard fix is to disable all desktop effects, and that seems to help considerably. It's sad really, because Cinnamon is nice and I'd use it as my daily driver if this resource hogging stopped. Even on my high end gear, isn't acceptable to me to have such high idle cpu time being consumed for no apparent reason.

I've found KDE Plasma to be about even in ram use With MATE. Debian 9 MATE and Debian 9 KDE and Kubuntu 18.04 tested on same machine. All were about 700mb ram with system monitor open, which was using perhaps 150-200mb ram. So somewhere around 500mb ram for KDE Plasma and MATE on my machine fresh boot idling.

No data for KDE but I have identical hds, one with MATE 17.3 and the other with MATE 19.
When booted to just the desktop with conky the 17.3 uses 332mb ram, and 19 uses 433mb.
The cpu percentage is trivially higher with 19, and I suppose a good measure of processor activity
is the core temps. With 17.3 the core temps are 48c, 47c, 47c, and 44c. With 19 they are
50c, 49c, 49c, and 47c. These readings taken after idle of 10 minutes, so I suppose 19 does use slightly
more processor cycles.
The strange thing I noticed when watching the MATE 19 conky at 5 min 30 seconds port 443 was mysteriously opened
by IP 23.60.72.92 and remained opened the remaining time.
What's that all about?

I think each release ram use is going to go up. Perhaps moving to gtk3 is responsible for some of the bump up in ram. I'm seeing 415mb ram use in MATE 19 idling. My temps are quite good:

This is what I am seeing with 18.3 Cinnamon, and it is no worse than what is shown above.

the only real activity was with the network.

I will stay with Cinnamon, it by far much easier to use than any of the other DEs.

I should have been more specific - Gnome 3 (Cinnamon base) is a resource hog. Gnome 2, of which MATE is a fork, not so much.

I have found that Cinnamon is slightly higher ram and cpu usage than Plasma 5 here. But my problem is those web sites that are determined to use pop out videos really drive the cpu usage high and cause heating problems on my lapttop. That seems to be much worse in Cinnamon than on Plasma. But still I like Cinnamon more. But that is just preference.
I'll be honest I didn't find all that much difference in between Mate, XFCE and Cinnamon on my machines. Each one has it's advantages and disadvantages and the preference of the user seems to be the deciding factor.

I was sorry to see that mint was dropping kde from it's line up but do understand the reasoning behind it.

Thanks Fred,
I have made firewall rules to block. Also I saw another popping up for just a second--too fast to read, so I
caught it in screenshot. It was google, llc. 104.198.143.177 on prt 80.
Blocked them as well.

I took the workstation to the garage and blew out some dust and cleaned the air filters--had been a while.
This lowered the 19 core temps to 46, 44, 43, 42, and the 17.3 temps 45, 43, 43, 40. Much closer than before,
with 17.3 being only trivially lower.
