Suse sold for 2.5 Billion Dollars

Post by Spearmint2 » Wed Jul 04, 2018 12:50 am

Suse bought by Swedish Equity Firm

I guess RedHat will be next on the list of some big firm to buy. Might be a good stock investment now.

Redhat has already been bought by Oracle some years ago, hasn't it?!

Saw that story yesterday and remember thinking SuSE certainly has changed hands a number of times over the years. Hope it keep going though. Holding companies are notorious for dismantling and selling of companies a piece at at a time.
Time will tell.
P.S Redhat has never been sold.

About Redhat:
Are you sure Oracle has not bought it? Thought this were the reason why their Oracle Linux looks much like a badly camouflaged Redhat Linux. It is clearly based in Redhat.

Code: Select all

/etc> cat os-release
NAME="Oracle Linux Server"
VERSION="7.4"
ID="ol"
VERSION_ID="7.4"
PRETTY_NAME="Oracle Linux Server 7.4"
ANSI_COLOR="0;31"
CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:oracle:linux:7:4:server"
HOME_URL="https://linux.oracle.com/"
BUG_REPORT_URL="https://bugzilla.oracle.com/"
ORACLE_BUGZILLA_PRODUCT="Oracle Linux 7"
ORACLE_BUGZILLA_PRODUCT_VERSION=7.4
ORACLE_SUPPORT_PRODUCT="Oracle Linux"
ORACLE_SUPPORT_PRODUCT_VERSION=7.4

/etc> cat redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.4 (Maipo)
OK, maybe I have been wrong all the time. And Oracle merely acquired the right to sell Redhat Linux, rebranded as Oracle Linux.

Quite sure karlchen. Red Hat is a publicly held company. As in, its shares are traded on the stock exchange. You too can own a piece of Red hat :) SUSE on the other hand is a privately held company.

SUSE's 2017 revenue was 304 million USD. Red Hat's was 2.9 billion USD. So Red Hat is about 10 times the size of SUSE. No surprise then that the market cap (total dollar value of outstanding shares) of Red Hat is currently 24 billion. In past year both have shown double digit revenue increase, about 20%. EQT, the one buying SUSE, is going to help SUSE continue and accelerate its growth. Good news for the next few years for SUSE. Eventually it may be sold off again or, maybe, they may issue shares in an IPO.

As for Oracle Linux, AFAIK they do the same thing as CentOS: take the source code of RHEL and build their own packages from it. That's permitted under the GPL. Just can't call it Red Hat or use packages built by Red Hat.

Hi, xenopeek.

My mental mismatch must have come into existence when Oracle bought Sun Microsystems. It happened that around the same time we setup the first server running on Oracle Linux. This resulted in the incorrect assumption that Oracle must have acquired Redhat as well. An assumption which I never questioned, because at that time I was under the impression that Oracle was on its way to acquire any other software producer in the world anyway.

Cheers,
Karl

Basically, I like the idea of Suse of being owned by a European enterprise. I consider myself a European patriot. On the one hand. On the other hand, I have grown old enough to learn that European enterprises can be as ruthless as companies anywhere else in the world. Oh well.
So in brief words, I have got no idea whether it is a change for better or for worse, I simply cannot tell. Will wait and see ...

If you want some interesting historical reading, check former stock ticker SCOX for SCO group and the battle between them and Linux some years back. As I remember it, SCO Group had bought some Unix variety from either Oracle or Novell, or maybe another like Caldera, then claimed they owned it all, including all rights to Linux too. It then went back to whomever owned it previously. A bit fuzzy memory of it over the years since, but I'm going to read up on it again. It was a classic business and OS war that went on. Anyway, if I'm mistaken, it's all in the links below. It was about that time that I think Redhat was going IPO too. It was a huge IPO at the time, then stock price of RHAT, now RHT came crashing down for awhile. Some made big money, some then lost big money in stock market.

Sweden is a European state. ;-)
Sweden should be famous for Ikea, Volvo, Köttbullar (meatballs), Pippi Longstocking, midsummer parties, and a few other things.

Being of religious mindset, I'm reminded of Emmanuel Swedenborg, especially his book "Heaven & Hell".

Of course, I don't think I can ever forget this one! :)
