Setting Shares in XFCE (LinuxLite) & MINT (SOLVED)

Post by lsemmens »

EDIT: AS PER ADVICE FURTHER DOWN - changed to Linux Mint XFCE the solution works for Mint, can't say for Lite, but I'd suggest that it would.

I'e set up a small ATOM based laptop using linuxlite which is, I believe, XFCE based Ubuntu. I cannot seem to find a method to share files or folders on my network

Samba is set up and working. I can see my network and can import stuff from it but this machine, whilst visible on the network will not allow me to share anything. I'm not familiar enough with terminal to do it there but am willing to learn.
Say I want to share /home/leigh/Documents/ how do I go about it? Right clicking and selecting properties (which is how I do it in Cinnamon) does not show any option to share. It does let me adjust permissions, but that is it.

Help will be greatly appreciated.

Is there a lightweight version of mint, I much prefer Cinnamon, but it is just a bit too slow on this device. My main box has suffered a major accident in that the screen is now hanging by only one hinge which has force me pressing this box into service until I can find another decent size lappie. (I'm a pensioner, so will be looking at govt auction sites.)

Yes, that would be Linux Mint XFCE.

If you wish, you can PM me your name and address. I'll be pleased to send you a decent laptop. No charge.

Cheers.

Thankyou for your kind offer Catweasel, you are a truly generous individual. I shall wait for the next auction, I can find a fairly recent machine for a couple of hundred dollars. It's a nuisance to me, that is all. It's not as though I don't have other options. If I were truly desperate, I can use a desktop computer of which I do own several. As it is, I am going to try Moem's suggestion and try Mint XFCE. That was my intent when I fount linuxlite. Off to download Mint XFCE now. :D

XFCE no longer has a way to create a samba share from Thunar.

But this is XFCE and Thunar can be made to do whatever you can imagine so you can create your own way: Create Samba Shares Directly from Thunar

But in the long run I would suggest just creating the share definition directly in /etc/samba/smb.conf or use the one that LinuxLite already set up for you - see below.

Fun facts about LinuxLite and Samba:

[1] It does make the effort to install Samba automatically.

[2] But it's disabled in it's firewall so you need to disable ufw:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw disable
Or allow Samba:

Code: Select all

sudo ufw allow Samba
[3] Linux Lite automatically creates a samba share of a "linux_share" directory in your home directory. You can see how it's set up in /etc/samba/smb.conf. And you can edit it's path to point to your "Documents" folder.

Thanks for that. This thread is almost redundant because I took moem's advice and installed Mint XFCE. It still has the same problem so am investigating your links, too, thanks altair4

The problem with Mint XFCE is that it doesn't do any of the things LinuxLite does with samba.

** So you will have to install samba:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install samba
** Mint doesn't enable ufw by default so you don't have to worry about disabling it or allowing Samba.

** As far as the share of your Documents folder you can either create the Thunar Custom Actions or simply create share definitions in /etc/samba/smb.conf:

For access only to you:

Code: Select all

[Documents]
path = /home/lsemmens/Documents
read only = No
valid users = lsemmens
And remember to add yourself to the samba password database:

Code: Select all

sudo smbpasswd -a lsemmens
For access to everyone:

Code: Select all

[Documents]
path = /home/lsemmens/Documents
read only = No
guest ok = yes
force user = lsemmens
Either way remember to restart smbd after editing smb.conf:

Code: Select all

sudo service smbd restart
