linux mint 19 won't install, switched to Ubuntu 14.04 instead

Post by wesiii » Wed Mar 27, 2019 3:39 pm

FYI, I am having the same problem installing linux mint 19.1 It works live, but when I dbl click to install nothing happens. I have a Dell Vostro 3500 with intel i5 processor. I have re-downloaded the iso and verified it each time. I have tried installing with both a DVD and USB drive with the same result. I finally decided to try Ubuntu 14.04 and it installed with no problems. I guess I will give up on Mint for now.

Good Luck, you do realize that Ubuntu 14.04 is only supported until maybe the middle of May this year, it depends on when Canonical wants to shut the update servers down. Officially support should end some time in April this year but they usually give people some slack and a little more time to upgrade to another supported version

Not really a support issue, so moved to Chat about Linux

Thanks, after I play with Ubuntu for awhile I will look at trying the Mint install again.

That laptop is almost 10 years old. Mint 19, like all distro releases using a comparably new kernel, has some trouble with old hardware. That's because the Linux Kernel Project has been dropping old hardware support like mad lately.

So comparing UBuntu 14.04 and Mint 19 on that machine isn't valid, and I doubt Ubuntu 18.04 (which Mint 19 is based on) would work better.

If I were you I'd try Mint 18.3, the Xfce or Mate version.

Well, I tried Ubuntu for a few days and decided to change to Mint. I re-installed the iso to a flash drive and plugged it into my Vostro 3500 on boot. The live desktop came up I dbl clicked on the install icon and the program started to install. It seems to be working and is installing as I am writing this. Yea!
