Here's to the end of a noble run...

OSDisc.com Has Closed

Hi Everyone,

After over 16 years, OSDisc.com has closed. If you've ordered from us, help is still available by emailing support@osdisc.com

I started OSDisc to spread Linux and help new users get started. But providing DVDs today has little effect on the spread of Linux. I regularly see small distros that provide tens of thousands of downloads, but few if any DVDs are provided by OSDisc. The vast majority of Linux users are downloading Linux themselves. And that's a great thing to see.

What we've accomplished:

Shipped over 300,000 discs and USB drives
Helped over 110,000 users get started with Linux
Answered over 25,000 tech support tickets
Given back over $200,000 to the open source community

Thank you to everyone for making OSDisc possible for the past 16 years.

Sincerely,
Ramsey Brenner
OSDisc.com Founder

I am impressed as well. What a great achievement. Thanks for posting that JoeFootball.

Sign of the times though indeed. Streaming and online services are "the future". I recently wanted to buy a dvd player for my girlfriend at a HUGE international multimedia store and I was baffled they had only 2 dvd players for sale. First I thought their website wasnt functioning well, because I couldnt find more dvd players than just these 2. But after googling a bit I soon discovered that cd/dvd/blu-ray is fast becoming an endangered species.

I must say that I started using LM17 because of a free cdrom that was attached to a Linux magazine. I still have it. And I could install it without an internet connection, which I didnt have at the time. Thanks to that Linux cdrom I am now typing this message. I still have some Live CD's. Usb sticks are getting cheaper, but not as cheap as I hoped and expected they would become. I havent seen any free usb sticks bundled with a computer magazine. A single cdrom/dvdrom still cant be beaten in price by a usb stick for the sole purpose of providing an OS.

Yeah - - it was mentioned, Last Monday on that Edition of Distrowatch.
& any reference(s) to OSdisc.com have also now been removed, from the Main LinuxMint Site.

this also will mean, that Forum Members can No Longer refer to that site,
- as an place to get an Copy of an LinuxMint Installation Media.
this will also mean, that Forum Members may have to supply some media to any N00Bs - - as required.
- - which also has happened,, in the past.

I just found about this today, in fact, just a few minutes ago.

I feel sad seeing the site go, but he has to do what works for him.

I can understand the DVD and CD traffic dropping, but many out there still don't know how to make USB flashdrive installations with "persistence" included. Maybe if he'd ONLY concentrate on supplying such as that, and also use USB flashdrives instead of multiple DVD's for supplying "Repository" files. Just go entirely to USB media use, drop the DVD's.

I remember how disappointed I was years back when compgeeks went to storefront only. I know I sent people their way back then, and have sent a number of others to osdisc for disc who felt they preferred to buy instead of make one themselves, especially those on limited bandwidth internet connections. Those are the ones who will be hurt the most, the ones who have download limits which would make it cheaper to buy a DVD instead of download and burn it themselves.

Life goes on. Maybe another site as great will come along in future.
