no sound on hdmi

Post by nalsdixit »

i have sound working on internal speakers and headphones, but hdmi only outputs video, and sound is from the internal speakers. fgos, i am running debian sid and not linux mint at this time, as that has resolved most of the sound issues i was facing on mint. however, i thought this forum could help me.

I assume you are trying to display and hear contents from your computer to another screen, like a TV? If so, is the TV mirroring exactly what is on your desktop or is it mirroring only your background image, as if it is giving you a second desktop space to work with?

One pebkac problem I had was - sound settings was showing my external monitor as an HDMI sound output. Could not get any sound out of it. Took me months, but finally realised that there were no speakers in the monitor, but if I plugged a speaker into the 3.5mm socket on the back on the monitor...

Check the simple things first.

You need to change the sink to get sound over HDMI. I have no way of telling which could be active, so one of these should work:

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_5__sink

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_4__sink

Code: Select all

pacmd set-default-sink alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1f.3-platform-skl_hda_dsp_generic.HiFi__hw_sofhdadsp_3__sink
After each change, start something new playing sound, such as this command in the terminal:

Code: Select all

aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Changing the sink this way does not as yet change the actively playing streams. It will when PulseAudio 14 becomes available.

somehow never saw the replies, and i assumed my post was deleted, as it was about another distro, not linux mint.

i see it got moved to the 'chat about linux section'.

anyway as an update, i changed software sources to include 'non free' and that did the trick, all sound/hdmi issues are now resolved
