An FireWall - OpenSnitch.

OpenSnitch - an application firewall for Linux

https://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20211206

OpenSnitch is a rare tool in the Linux ecosystem.
It is a service with a friendly graphical desktop application,
- which assists the user in blocking network connections,
based on which daemon or application is making the connection attempt.

some forum folks have asked if there is an better Linux based Firewall.

I looked at the directions linked in the article and, right off the bat, encountered this:

"Make sure you have a correctly configured Go >= 1.12 environment, that the $GOPATH environment variable is defined and then:"

This is a pet peeve of mine; telling someone to do something without telling them how to do it. I have no clue what the writer is saying.

From the GitHub page
https://github.com/evilsocket/opensnitch/releases
there are 2 .deb files to download.

If you right mouse click, open with GDebi Package manager then you can install from there.
I installed the GUI deb package second.
There are quite a few dependencies that GDebi finds for you automatically.

Please do not consider OpenSnitch as replacement for default firewalls. As Jesse mentioned in his article "it does not appear to interfere with any other existing firewalls, such as UFW".
It seems that OpenSnitch is easier to install these days. Though it is especially welcomed by migrated Windows' ZoneAlarm users it can be useful tool for analyzing network connections. But nothing good will come from it without proper understanding. I remember incessant questions from AtGuard users (firewall later integrated in the Norton firewall) "Should I allow or block this", or someone irritated by constant pop-ups and allowed all connections they don't understand.

I'm still confused. I clicked on number one and was directed to another page. Under GUI, I downloaded the deb version. Now, do I download the daemon on the first page shown as 2 in your picture or the one that's on the redirected page (Github is well named  )?

Not sure why that was Jeannie. When I click on the word deb under Daemon a file called opensnitch_1.4.1-1_amd64.deb automatically downloads..

It seemed effective-but I decided to belay employment till I understood it better.
Utilities like this will need a taming period.
Good luck uninstalling this though.
After 'uninstalling' run the following in a terminal:

Code: Select all

locate opensnitch
expect disappointment

Are you saying it leaves a lot of traces?

I always make a Timeshift backup before installing a new program. If I have problems with the new program or just don't like it, I simple restore the snapshot.
