I have a number of browser bookmarks related to Bash commands, scripting and using the terminal.
Although I have found online references that are very good, I like having a book that I can sit with, search and browse in any way I like.
Specifically, a book with a good complete index, clear and concise explanations of what a command does, decipherable syntax and parameters, and primary knowledge needed for scripting.
I have one book that I bought a couple of years ago, but I've been looking for something else.
One of my online searches recently returned a result listed as "A Better Bash Guide".
I thought, wow, this might be what I've been looking for!
This is what it pointed to:

Not quite what I had in mind.
I'll continue by wading through this thread:

I recommend Advanced BASH Scripting Guide. Or get it via the 'abs-guide' package.
I'm also Terminalforlife on GitHub.
Re: A Better Bash Guide (or something else)
Thanks for the suggestion, Termy.
I found the guide:
https://tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf
The book I've decided to get is Learning the bash Shell.
https://www.amazon.com/Learning-bash-Sh ... 0596009658
It is #4 at amazons's Best Sellers in Unix Programming:

And, #7 at amazons's Best Sellers in Unix Shell:

I have a couple of other books by O'Reilly that I'm pleased with.
One of them is CSS: The Missing Manual which is very good.
I had seen your YouTube channel before, but don't remember watching any videos.
Will watch some of your material:

Re: A Better Bash Guide (or something else)
Bash guides are great. I personally recommend The Linux Command Line by William Shotts - https://www.linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
But the best teacher is learning as you go. Find a small bash script project to work on, and start building. Look up stuff as you need.

It seems the channel does not exist anymore, is the url right or did it change names? I'm also trying to find good resources to get better at bash and how to have a nice setup.greentea wrote: ⤴Mon Jan 24, 2022 10:16 pm I had seen your YouTube channel before, but don't remember watching any videos.

Likely there will be feedback for participating in thread necromancy but..... the post immediately above yours links to an outstanding introduction.
The pdf version is available for free.

Yeah — sorry about that. That channel was nuked a couple of months ago, mainly down to being fed up of Google and them letting YouTube go to poop. Might bring it back some day, but I'm in no rush. If Google sorts themselves out, maybe it'll happen. Unfortunately, Google/YouTube seems to just be getting progressively worse.

Hi, thanks for the tip I didn't think replying to a few months old thread would be a problem. I know the book but I find shorter videos work better for me.iliketrains wrote: ⤴Sat Jul 23, 2022 4:21 pm Likely there will be feedback for participating in thread necromancy but..... the post immediately above yours links to an outstanding introduction.

Hi, and thanks for clarifying that. I agree, for me the "YouTube experience" has decayed to almost unbearable and continues to get worse by the second. Have you considered using Odysee or something "fancier" like PeerTube?Termy wrote: ⤴Mon Jul 25, 2022 8:24 am Yeah — sorry about that. Yep, I've considered and am often recommended sites like those, but they're sadly not really for me.

Understandable. Thanks for clearing that up!
