NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
I had to double check it wasn't April fools. With the R515 version Nvidia are releasing kernel drivers as open source. The code is on GitHub

This is a good write-up of what this means for Nvidia users on Linux, by Red Hat's desktop & graphics lead: https://blogs.gnome.org/uraeus/2022/05/ ... for-linux/. In short: right now not a lot and there's a lot of work to be before it benefits users, but it opens a door.

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
that is good news, but for me, useless, I have not done any machine coding since 1983
NVIDIA have just gone open-source!

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
Not useless at all. If I understand it correctly it means that others, who do code, can potentially make kernel drivers available to the machines that you and me may want to use.
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
They spent an entire Linux Action News episode on this. In fact, they interviewed one of the folk from Red Hat who's involved with this. It's very cool.

Good news!
Hopefully it will lead to better out of the box support for Nvidia cards.

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
While it probably will take a little while to be fully useful this is great news for nvidia users. It means the open source community can actually contribute and improve them, which isn't possble with their closed source drivers (which don't necesarily follow xorg updates very well).

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
Now what? This might even mean I eventually need to stop dumping on Nvidia...
Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
Thank you; very reassuring...
It'll likely not so much be the hardware though -- and if it's also no longer the software... let's just say I wouldn't want it to be only Jensen's leather jacket

Re: NVIDIA are releasing open source kernel drivers
Surely if Nvidia cards are more compatible with Linux, then more people can use it with ease. Perhaps this is a sign that Linux is gaining ground. I think the Steam Deck has something to do with this.
